Is this a good deal? 'tis for no 2 daughter, off to uni next year.

For a refurb? Yes, pretty good. I paid about double that for a brand
new one earlier this year.

 

That seems to be extremely cheap for a MacBook, given that the slightly
newer models in the Apple refurb store are 900 quid more.

There's got to be a catch IMHO - this looks *way* to cheap for a 17"
MacBook.

 

I was wondering that, isn't it likely to be related to the scam that was
running a few months ago?

Europc are pretty reputable - have used them before. They get a lot of
end-of-quarter stuff to shift.

Very old machine, at least 3 years. And a big old beast so crap for
taking to lectures.

Look at the new, current, 13in Macbooks.

Get her that. It's only 100 quid more when you add on VAT to the
other one and it's much more suitable.

Apple also do an education discount.

 

.... and without looking at the above link, it might be worth checking
out Apple's own refurb store. That'll potentially save a couple of quid
as well.

My Mum has a 2006-era Macbook pro. I much prefer the keyboards on
those ones, compared to the cheap, clicky ones they have now. Christ
knows why they changed.

 

Probably saves 10c per hundred keyboards. The one on my Macbook (2008
vintage) isn't bad, but I've had laptops with better keyboards. Not many
though, a lot of them seem to have really shit keyboards.

 

I think the 2007 (i.e. mine) is also better than the newer ones.

Do you mean those rubbery keys that along with the casing made the pre
Unibody Macbooks look and feel like they were made by Fisher Price?

See now, I'm the opposite. I've got a 2007 MacBook Pro, and a 2008
MacBook, and I much prefer the keyboard on the MacBook. To the extent
I've bought an Apple keyboard to use at work.

I'm sure it was great work... in the early 1980s. I don't see why
Apple are so keen on making it their standard keyboard, that's all.
