Any recommendations for a good Chinese meal in central London? Me and
the missus are in town for A Romantic Weekend(tm) next week and we'll
need food to keep our energy up...

We'll need somewhere that we can get a table on a Friday night
    (preferably) without booking.

    I rather like this place

    Mr Kong's

I would particularly recommend the duck in yam paste.

Actually, seem like a damn good idea to nip down there :)

Avoid Chinatown if you want a nice romantic meal - of course, you could
always try Wong Keis (sp?) ;-)

If money is no object, try Hakkasan.

Or, slightly more affordable: Ken Lo's Memories of China (somewhere in SW1)
or the Royal China (Queensway - they do a superb dim sum).

Ah yes. Heard about that. Probably not what we're looking for.

I *love* dim sum. I could graze all night. Thanks!

If you're after good food rather than an 'intimate experience' then I can
recommend Wong Kei in Wardour St near Leicester Square. Not posh, not
romantic but serves some of the best chinese food in London. Oh and the
staff pride themselves on their rudeness.

Probably not. SWMBO had a *bad* Vietnamese meal once, and has no desire
to repeat the experience. Shame... :^(

I've been thrown out of Wong Kei. It was about 8 years ago mind ewe.
They're definitely rude, but they really can't deal with you being rude
    too. :)

    </p>

But the food is fairly shite isn't it? Unless of course, you're a
student, you've been on the beers, you only have £4 to spend and you're
in no state to tell the difference IYSWIM.

The rudeness seems to be almost a selling point[1]
Can't say I agree with you there. The sweet and sour pork is superb as is
    the duck in plum sauce.

    [1] Bit like UKRM really

Actually, I've only had dim sum on a Sun morning there. Not sure if they
serve the dim sum menu on other days too, but maybe worth checking out to
be sure. Also, I should have mentioned that it gets fairly busy.

Would be nice if their website didn;t require some shite stylee plugin to
work. OK so they may want to offer an 'enhanced' experience to some people
but they should offer a good quality website to those of us that don't
    want to install Flash crap

There is a particularly good one on Queensway, it’s called the Mandarin
Kitchen, [1] it’s bang opposite Queensway tube station, you want to have
garlic and spring onion or garlic and ginger Lobster noodles, it’ll blow
you away, they get through a 100 odd lobsters a day so they are supper
fresh, they coat the shell in a sticky flubberty goop that tastes fabulous.

For starters though you want scallop in chilly and black been source,
giant prawns fried with spring onions, garlic and chilli and possibly
    crabs claws.

Failing that you’ll get a dam fine more traditional Chinese supper and
good Dim Sum at Kam Ton, [2] further down Queensway past Bayswater tube
station and on the same side of the road as it, whether you go for
supper or lunch try their especially good crispy belly pork [3].

[1] Booking is a good idea though; if you need it I have the number
    somewhere.
[2] No idea how it’s spelt but it’s got an all glass front with a yellow
and red sign all the way along the top, it’s between Moscow Road and
    Porchester Gardens.
[3] It’s not Dim Sum but they’ll serve it with Dim Sum if you’re nice.

It's not *hard* to get thrown out now is it :)
Actually the food in there can be among the very best IME. It can
also be dire, but it seems to depend on how busy it is. The busier
    the better IMHO
