I've been asked if i'd like to be considered for a job. It's in
    University Street, WC1E 6JJ.

What are the decent areas within a 30 min bike ride? Just so I can take
a look at property and such, one of a few items to be considered.

I can only recommend what I know, but Bush Hill Park, and some of the
other bits near Enfield Town are nice enough, and you can easily get
to WC1 in 30 minutes (well, if you don't mind a bit of cuntishness, of
    course!)

There are many excellent areas within a few minutes bike ride of that
location; Mayfair, Belgravia, St. John's Wood, etc. They are a tad expensive
though. If you are looking for somewhere nice but reasonably priced then
unless you can filter faster than a London despatch rider on a rush job, you
may have a slightly longer commute. IME a 45 - 50 minute spirited commute
can get you as far as the M25 which gives you a few more possibilities.

Ta. A bit of cuntishness is an absolute minimum. I prefer being an utter
****, as far as is possible.
Err, yes, you have. It was only once though. Champ has met me twice, and
still doesn't remember, so I don't hold it against you.

Heh, there are some very nice places round there, but as you say, some
    are a touch expensive. I'd be looking for 200 - 250 K, possibly up to 300K.
Not after anything fancy, a reasonably nice area, garage and garden -
typical suburban semi would do ok.

I don't hang about when filtering, but I'm not /totally/ suicidal,
fairly close, though. Given that I'll be on call some of the time
(emergency response means staying on site, rapid means within 30 mins) I
don't want to go too far.

MattG was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
That sort of money would probably buy you something around here (North
Finchley) - the house I rent here fulfills all of the above and I
would guess that a similar one would probably come in around the 200
    mark, if that.

  16. Waltham Forest - better bits of Walthamstow and Chingford will get you
something decent for that sort of price range. You will be on the limit
of your 30 min parameter though during the rush hour!

Not as posh a post code as darsy's though.

    Ta, dunno about quick, though.

Course, at the moment I'm the rider of a non (or at least very noisily)
running ZX6R. Few more weeks and I should be on a ZX7 or ZX9. Just
waiting for the money to sort its self out, then I'll be doing test rides...

I’d go somewhere around Kennington, there’s a lovely Shepherd Neame pub
in Cleaver Square [1] and in the event of the bike being out of order
it’s not far to get to either the Northern or the Victoria line, either
of which will take you to Warren Street tube [2] with no changing, also
if you look at a map of London it turns out to be the geographic centre.
For the sort of money you’re talking you’d get a nice 2~3 bed flat but
your unlikely to find a house.

The secret with the drain is, if you get on reasonably near the
beginning of the line and get a seat and don’t have to change it’s not
too bad, though I sometimes lose my seat to the old, the pregnant, the
physically disabled or to beautiful girls. The nice thing about standing
is then you can have the fun of puling morning commuters papers down to
point out needy people and suggesting kindly they give up their seat,
their usual tactic is to pretend they haven’t noticed them, but you get
some evil looks, I’ve actually had a 30 odd year old suited chap refuse
to give up his seat for a woman using crutches, the woman sitting next
to him gave up her seat and I accidentally fell backwards at a
particularly bumpy stretch of track and stamped on his foot with a full
14 stone through the heal of my brogues, I didn’t feel any think snap to
my surprise but he squealed like a stuck pig.

[1] a fairly rare thing in London.
[2] or to Mornington Crescent if that’s your fancy
