Rather than trying to fix it, I'd recommend you **** Linpus off, and
stick Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 on instead. It's a *load* better.

You should be able to download the iso on a normal windows pc, then
use http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ to stick it on a USB stick.

Looks like the x-server is fscked. Corrupt xorg.conf?
    Indeed. /Much/ better
Assuming you've got linpus lite on a USB stick, what happens if you boot
    from that (F12 at boot-up)?

Except for the 'internet' bit and task bar.

Linpus is fine for me and it works. I'd rather just get
this one running properly again with all the stuff I
already have on it instead of reinstalling.

Ok, it's now fixed. It seems that my desktop config file
got overwritten somehow. Luckily I had an older backup
so I've restored that and it's now working again!

Yup, I've had mine a year now (from tomorrow, to be precise ;-)
and I love it. The kids love it too, which is why tomorrow the
oldest will be waking up to the bright pink model.

I really should learn more Linux stuff though, it just
confuses the **** out of me as I don't understand half
    the terminology that is used!

  10. Given other stuff on the screen is OK, I'd guess that your wallpaper
image file was turned to mush somehow. Or possibly deleted, tho' I'd have
thought that may throw up an error alert. Or the link corrupted in your config
    file.

Anyway, it's fixed now -- until the next time...

The Linpus system has a desktop with a load of links on it to enable
you to run apps from a home-screen system rather than a taskbar. Like
    this: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3411/3311281811_876e3eee35.jpg

It's all very neat and convenient, especially with the smaller screen
and built-in mousepad. Nice and easy access to the stuff you need.
Anyway, it's powered by an xml file to describe the layout, links,
icons and backgrounds. You can obviously customise this to put your
own apps and icons on there.

For some reason, mine got overwritten with something that shouldn't
have been there. I think I must have been messing around with some of
the XFCE (the desktop environment) which meant that something
    overwrote
it and lost all the groups, icons, backgrounds and stuff. I know I had
been messing with the screensaver a little while ago so maybe it was
that. But anyway, there was a backup which I restored from and it's
    now all hunky dory again.

Linux Mint is, well, mint. I found it ran better than Ubuntu Netbook or
even Xubuntu. Just done surgery to install a 1 gig chip and I am well
    pleased with the result.
