This month's Bike (with a Fazer on the front) has a head to head
between the ZX-12R, The ZX-10R and the ZZR1400.

Quite interesting stuff and the performance is extremely similar with
each being better at different things.

I didn't realise the pricing was so similar either - the ZZR seems a
    bargain.

And I can even get insurance on it.

Though the comment that a rear tyre lasts 1000 miles is a bit.. off
    putting.

Interesting. I've just put 014s on and have two track days booked over
the next two months. I wonder how this will shorten their lives.

I tend to ride until I suddenly notice 'Ooops, my tyres are illegal. I
wonder how long I've been riding them like this?'

The one I replaced just before the Sedan run had apparently[1] done
~5500 km. When I looked at it after it was removed the entire
thickness of the center of the tyre was only about 1mm...

[1] Looking at the service record, which was last updated just before
our France run of last July.

Heh. Sadly my awareness goes in phases:

    1. New tyre - ooh, this feels nice,
    2. Getting on - maybe not quite as nice as it used to be, must get
    round to replacing it.
    3. Look at tyre - oh shit, I could push my fingernail through that...

Heh, I'm worse with the car. It's usually the garage that phone during
a service to tell me they're fucked.

Ah well I have a slight advantage there - twice a year I change the
summer and winter tyres (and wheels) around, so I always have a look
then. That's one thing I do myself, on the basis that I can change
four wheels over in about half an hour, which is much less time than
it would take to get to a tyre centre _and_ wait for them to do it. As
well as not having to pay.

Mine dew, last year when I fitted the winter ones, I was aware that at
least one was shagged-ish, so when, once fitteed, I noticed it was
terribly out of balance I just thought I'd wait until I got round to
getting it changed... which never actually happened. When I changed
them back the tread pattern was still visible, albeit no longer legal.

I reckon you'd never notice anything other than the tyre maintaining it's
    original profile for longer.

The 014's square off pretty quickly on the road, but on a track, surely it's
going to spend most of it's time on the sides or edges, so it's life
probably won't be affected at all.

Just read that article. Interesting stuff. Shame about the lack of
torque below 5000RPM though. I'll be interested to see how the rumoured
    revised Busa compares.
They say that about all sorts of bikes though. I reckon you'd have to
be trying pretty hard to achieve it.

Hmm, I think it's relative though - according to the dyno chart it's
making around 60lb.ft at approx 3500 rpm!

    Compare that to a GSX-R600 that PEAKS at 45 lb.ft at 10 000rpm and I
think it's a pretty good figure!

My opinion as a ham fisted cnut is that I think having a zone where you
can ride for when you just want some drive (ie a greasy road) is very
    handy indeed.

Especially when you know the world will disappear if you just go
    2000rpm higher.

    sounds like me.

On the RGV, there's plenty of tread left, but the tyres are
bobbled-to-****. It feels OK though, so therefore it must be fine.

Actually, you know, I don't even know what sort of tyres they are now
    I think about it.

The throttle goes both ways, if a tad 'boolean' on the 12R ;-)

I should have blagged a go on yours actually to see if they fit me as
that's another potential 'silly yet mostly comfortable' motorcycle.
