After the burglary at my father's a few days ago, three items are
unaccounted for; one wedding ring, one engagement ring and a gold cross
    on a chain.

The wedding ring is a straightforward gold band circa 1960. The
engagment ring is slightly more complicated; really nice solid gold band
but I *think* that the jewels were paste (Ciro of Bond St).

Gold cross. Hmmm. Solid gold, minimal decoration, tasteful. Acquired on
a trip to Rome circa 1950. The only real proper bit of jewellry that my
mother owned. It was either a gift from a nun (mother's aunt), or...
Ahem, one of the Forte dynasty that mother met on the trip. Either way
it was more Tiffany than Liz Duke.

So, bearing in mind that so far I've not managed to find any photos of
the items, nor do I have any documentary evidence, what are the
important words or phrases that I have to use with the insurance
company's bling assessor tomorrow to avoid them valuing the lot at
    £7.50?

Shit, sorry to hear that. Based on what I learnt about the Bassett
drugies thanks to the ex's son, I'd highly recommend a trip to Cash
    Converters in Commercial Rd, Swindon.

Talking to the police, that seem to think there's a group (or
individual) with a common MO; break in, go straight to the bedroom and
look purely for gold. Lack of mess etc suggests it's straight off in an
envelope to wefenceyourgold.com. They think it's likely to be a fairly
switched on crim rather than a druggie.

That said, at it appears that there's a lot of nerdowells hanging round
after hours, so I plan to rig the place so it lights up like a Christmas
tree and brings Lorraine (like wot they say in the filums) pretty soon.

Not seen 'em, not seen nuffink like that.

Go to Graff's (any top notch jeweller's), find the equivalent, or as
close to as poss, and use that price as a guide.

I would not assume a nice weighty gold band was only blessed with paste,
go for the real deal; diamonds, it's what you've always been told.
Semi-precious stones aren't normally substituted with immitation stuff,
but there are lab grown emeralds, rubies and sapphires out there that
look too good to be true, so synthetic rather than natural.

Assume it was all at least 18ct gold, Italy does not sell 9ct stuff.

I don't expect the assessor will get involved with putting a price on
    sentimentality.
