That's what I was thinking. It's the term I use; suitably divorced from
    reality.

I thought FTE was an IBM-ism until you mentioned it.

You want to see the recruitment policy at my place then. You'd love
it but we're probably breaking every law there is on
    race/sex/age/religion discrimination.

Its toothless - and its not just us - its all public sector. People
are just scared to do anything that might upset others. I`ve got 3
days of "respect for diversity" training this week. Got told off in my
last one for refering to thieving scum - apparently I should have more
respect as they "all have a story"! ffs

Thank god for the RUC ;o)
You *could* sell that one to the Mail for a few bucks

N.I. may be the last port of decent (in)sanity in the UK.

  7. It's fine for speech though. I wouldn't bother for music stations.

And a Fireman is now a Firefighter, and a leading firefighter is now a
    crew manager. Etc...

Playing the PC Devil's Advocate here for a moment, it was probably
some "idiots in offices" who decreed that police officer's shouldn't
any longer call people "pakis", "wogs", "coons", etc.

    See my point?

Eh? I've been using it (and heard it being used) for about 5 years when
we're talking about resourcing projects etc; a measurement of the
manpower needed in a billable unit.

Yeah, that's the context I use it in, for example projects would be
    costed against FTE requirements.

In which context WTEs for Whole Time Equivelants might be more
    accurate.

Is it not 'Full Time Equivalent' rather than employee? We use it a lot
in the NHS - especially as there are a lot of part time employees and if
you are planning a project or a budget you need to know the FTE numbers.

  20. When visiting RAF bases I was 'A guest of the CO' and as such had my own
'batman' (if that's what they were called in the RAF) to make sure my
temporary quarters were OK and replace my shoes with someone else's pair
that had been kept clean all their life.

Oh and I was not allowed to pay for a drink in the officers mess.

I remember after a few days coming out of the windowless officers mess
at RAF Waddington thinking I should go to bed as it was late, to find it
    was only 4:00 PM.

    Mmmmm Avro Vulcans mmmmmmmmmmm.

Any one who has not seen one at work has missed something.
