I agree with all the replies so far in that I'd be more than happy to
do so if it were 'just as good'. Perhaps you'd try and explain why you
wouldn't, as I infer that this would be your own viewpoint?

  5. Well the one on the left looks like a "proper" watch to me but then I am
    notoriously fussy about watches.

I treated myself to a Victorinox (Swiss Army knife co.) watch recently -
so far it has been superb. It was a toss up between that and a Mondaine
(Swiss Railways style) watch. Thankfully there is a small but decent
watch shop opposite our offices which stocked both.

    How accurate is a Rolex?
My $7.49 Casio consistently gains a second per week so it could be
pretty accurate if it had a trimmer capacitor.

  8. *I* rather fancy one of those too. I am wondering whether building a
collection of watches, like SOBs, is a wise thing to do....

Do the railways still provide watches for their staff? I'm sure they
used to, like the military provided them for officers.[/QUOTE]

The Lesser Ranks sometimes got issued them too back in the Eighties,
but only for major [1] exercises.

They had great readability in the dark. And a radiation symbol on the
    back.

Daytonas. Not the security Evos like Gayboy Ferrier has just got, the
ones just down from them. Still 300 quid, mind.

I won a Mont Blanc pen in an IT competition years ago. I was afraid of
losing it and never took it out with me. In the end I sold it. New
price was then 222 pounds; I got 100 for it (cleaned out and in
original box), with which I was well pleased.

As for watches, the most expensive watch I have ever bought is the one
I have now - a Storm that cost (IIRC) 50 quid at the airport about 7
years ago. I had to replace my aged cheapo Lorus as it became
unreliable after about 10 years. I bought a more expensive watch
because for the first time I cold afford it and because I liked the
looks. But I would never pay more than the updated equivalent, however
much I could afford. I don't like status symbols.

  20. Colleague of mine used[1] to collect Lugers, I've been with him
shooting an very early, ~1910 model IIRC. The pride of his collection
was a Kriegsmarine issue Luger (£2000 in 1980). Apparently they were
issued to officers only and there was production run of only a few
thousand. The vast majority were lost at sea and after the end of the
war the allies apparently re-machined a lot of german hand guns for
    allied ammunition.

So unaltered survivors were very rare, no idea if this one got pulped.
