Do you need to carry a red warning triangle or Hi-vis jacket to travel
in Spain or France on a motorcycle? One of my customers has asked and I
couldn't find the answer online anywhere. There's lots of info about
car related topics, but none specific to bikes.

In the same vein, what about Italy, Switzerland, Germany and the rest
of Europe? Is there a website aimed at people taking bikes touring
around Europe and the laws that need to be adhered to?

    Triangle for bike, no.

Whether you're a tourist or not ain't got anything to do with it. Not in
France anyway. Needed for cages (just for the driver), not for bikes.

No for France. Pretty sure it's no for Spain too.
Heh, not what I've seen. I know, why don't you set up a bikers forum for bikers
    that tour Europe. :)

I concur. I CBA now but we dug out the relevant French website whenever the
hi-viz bollocks was introduced for cars.

I think you are supposed to have spare bulbs & a first aid kit. I never
bother, although my washbag happens to be a first aid pouch sent as a
freebie by an insurance company a while back. The only bulb spare bulb I
would carry is a headlamp as French plod will stop you if you don't have a
headlight on. As my main/dip bulbs are both H1 my spare is in the main beam
    lamp.

Here I think the car has to have one for passengers as well - at least the
front seat passenger. I carry two anyway, best in view so one thing less for
    plod to stop you for.

No and no but for the amount of space a hi-vis waistcoat takes up I'd
have one in the panniers if I was traveling alone. Never mind the
safety element, it's just easier to **** the local plod off by having
one rather than them getting on your case for not having one.

If you're traveling in a group they won't push their luck as much but
given the amount of time they can **** you around for it's easier to
just bow down and play the game then ride away laughing than it is to
    argue your case.
Who needs a website? Just don't get caught speeding.

And then when they see your reg plate they'll roll their eyes and tell
    you to **** off.

    Eh Champ?

Er, how does that work then? Do you have them hanging in the back or
    something?

Yeh, the French often hang 'em on the back of the seat like you might
    with your jacket at work.

Are you suggesting the Spanish differ wildly from that?

No, but I failed to read Paul's post correctly, didn't notice the "best
in view bit" and hoped that this little exchange would end before I
needed to admit my reading comprehension is on a par with an 8 year old.

    Wrong.

It's needed for French-registered cages, but foreign ones need only
comply with their own national rules. So in our Swiss-plated cars we
don't need to carry hi-vis vests.

Although as they were flogging them for a couple of euros last year
when the law came in, we've got one in each car anyway, just for the
    hell of it, like.

Well last month, as a UK tourist, you did not need one (according to AA).
Frogs do. I did check them all and conformed for all including CH, up the
the point of having the triangle under my seat and not in the boot, bulb
kit, documents and enough Euro for fines.
