Cheers to all respondents. Investigations continue.

There's no clue from the 1881 or 1891 census info either, as they've
put their birthplace down as "Smethwick, Staffs" in 1891, and in 1881
    they're down as "Shrewsbury".

How fucking difficult can it be, ffs? Remembering where you were born
isn't quite up there with memorising the compleat works of
    Shakespeare, is it?

I obviously come from a long line of halfwits.

Odd. As others have pointed out, Hanley would be the most likely - all
the letters up to the Y are consistent with the rest of the writing,
including the ambiguous N, but the Y is very strange. Sure, it's a bit
smudged, and maybe the scan has missed something, but everywhere else
the tail of the letter is very pronounced. It looks more likely to me
that the writer simply trascribed it incorrectly.

Stoke on Trent was still six separate towns until 1910 so my money is on
    Hanley.

Isn't researching family history (horribly) fascinating though thanks to
    the interwebby thing.

Perhaps they had their reasons ;) My ancestors seem to have had a very
interesting time and inventive answers for the enumerators. You are
clearly already aware of the need not to trust today's transcribers and
get to check the original document.

Don't forget that there's often a difference between the place you're
born and the place it's registered. And it's sometimes also not the
same place that your parents were living at the time. I was born in
Chaddesden[1], Derby but my birth certificate has it down as Shardlow,
which for some reason must have been where the event was registered.

[1] Yeah yeah, bring it on.

OK. They chose Shardlow, because Chad's a fucking shithole....... Happy?
Although, that said, why didn't they just say "Spondon"? It's next door and
nowhere near as crap (even back when you were born).

most boring place on the Notts/Derbys border)

Fine. Although we moved away from there when I was three, so I've no
idea what it was actually like back then.
I think it's more likely down to older administrative orders - Chaddo
was relatively new and Spondon had grown from a tiny village, so it's
quite possible that Shardlow was still sonehow the responsible
    registry office.
Heh. Decent garden centre there, is about all I can remember.

I am. I was gonna do Cornwall and Devon last Sunday, but didn't fancy
it with iffy headraces. Prolly this weekend instead.

Then it's the West country during Platyfest weekend, Kent on the way
back from Chimay, Wales at Bank Holiday weekend, Midlands at EOSM.
    Surrey/Sussex/Hants whenever.

Only leaves Northern England and erm, Scotland to fit in.

I still think you should go to Chimay, personally. Or are you not a
tenty type of chap? The paddock would be right up your street.

I probably should, but I'm a bit overspent on holiday and holiday budget
    at the moment.
