Just chain lube every day (I was despatching) would be getting on for £5 or more a month, without the hassle of cleaning the chain/spraying it every day/twice a day, so undoubtedly cheaper using a shaft drive.
Absolute bollocks. I fit a Scottoiler touring kit which gets transfered from bike to bike as and when I sell them. I top it up every 3,000 miles with 500ml of chainsaw oil, cost £1[1]. The oil keeps the chain clean and lubes it, I give the wheel a wipe over once a week and whatever shit is there, which isn't much, comes off easily. Chains and sprockets typically last 25 - 30K miles. There's no real advantage to having a shaft drive, but plenty of disadvantages as far as I can see. [1] I could have paid much less than the £10 for 5 litres I got it for, but I bought quality Husqvarna stuff.
