Absolute bollocks. I fit a Scottoiler touring kit which gets transfered
from bike to bike as and when I sell them. I top it up every 3,000 miles
with 500ml of chainsaw oil, cost £1[1]. The oil keeps the chain clean
and lubes it, I give the wheel a wipe over once a week and whatever shit
is there, which isn't much, comes off easily.

Chains and sprockets typically last 25 - 30K miles. There's no real
advantage to having a shaft drive, but plenty of disadvantages as far as
    I can see.

[1] I could have paid much less than the £10 for 5 litres I got it for,
but I bought quality Husqvarna stuff.

  3. That's probably the UJ, yes, but not the support bearing.

What about fuel costs, shaftiues are generally heavier for the same
    power output.
With a Scottoiler I don't need to adjust the chain between tyre changes.
I wash my bike regularly, so a little bit of oil fling isn't a problem
for me cos I know the chain is getting lubed. My objection to shafties
is the weight panalty, and the crap handling.

Neither so much of an issue when in outfit use.

Not three-wheelers either according to the ACU or NHCA. A splendidly
idiosyncratic form of vehicle in their own right.
