We have a 1982? Takamine EF261S (made in Japan) on approval from an old
mate of SWMBO's and former member of the same folk band from way back.
Lovely small slim cutaway body (the guitar!). I suspect they are usually
chosen for playing plugged in, but though the volume is not fantastic,
the tone is (to my ears) wonderful. Through the lad's Peavey practice
    amp it is lovely.

So nice to play that I might even get my finger picking back up to snuff
again. The small body makes it easier for the lad to play than a
'jumbo', and the light weight better for SWMBO to haul it round the
various pub sessions at festivals like Bromyard next week.

Still negotiating a price, if we decide to keep hold of it, so any
ideas? I can see what new ones go for, which allegedly have better
'electrics', but we are finding it hard to find similar pre-owned
    examples as a guide.

Just had a quick flick through this months Guitar mags and couldn't
find anything comparable for a guide.

You could take it and show Trev Buck the guitar tech at PMT in
Birmingham he may give you a good estimate. ( having just typed that I
just know that Cane et al will be along with a comment pretty damn
    quick)

On the subject of finger style guitar... Martin Simpson is playing at
Cookley School Thurs jan 22nd .. phone 01562 850397 and ask for martin
    or Jan for more info.

You want a hacking guitar, not an expensive, quality one for Bromyard
    pub sessions

and don't forget the effect of drunkards, rain and tents on quality
    instruments

Good points. She does sometimes borrow my ancient Jedson for such
occasions. I suspect I am trying to find justifications for persuading
    SWMBO to keep it.

    Very sound advice.

I have a Takamine EGS430SC which I bought from porl and I must say
it's the sweetest acoustic guitar I've ever owned.

  7. that looks similar to the Takamine i bought a few weeks ago in an
attempt to learn to play it - Takamine EG561C
Oh. Still, mine was a bargain at $200.

    About 3"...
    Oh. Guitars. Yes. Sorry.

EG140 is a small jumbo NEXC body thingy with a basic pre-amp (bass,
mid, treble eq plus gain). Top is solid spruce. Back and sides are
laminated rosewood (there's no significant difference between
"laminated" and "solid" back and sides on an electro by the way).
And its finished in a really sexy wine red.

    <googles>
EGS430SC is a NEXC body with a solid cedar top with laminated nato
(google it!) back and sides and the same pre-amp as the 140. And it's
    "wood coloured" not red.

Other than the woods they appear to be the same guitar. I've had mine
since 1999 so I'd guess that yours is just a "later model".
There will be slight differences to the sound played acoustically and
even less difference when plugged in.

A friend of mine who earns his living playing guitar (you'll have
heard of him, but I'm not naming him) reckons that, acoustically,
there's almost no difference between my EG140 and his 1998 Taylor
412CE. Plugged in is a different matter though - the Taylor has "high
    end" Fishman electrics.

If you want a real treat, find a guitar shop that sells Santa Cruz
guitars and try out an OM model.
Bet you don't leave the shop with your credit card intact. :)
    (I didn't)

A Takamine IS a hacking guitar though. Not a BAD guitar, but nothing to
write home about or worry about if it's in a pub environment.

I can't believe what Takamine are selling their latest offerings for either.

  13. How about having a missus that keeps saying "I'd really like a
Martin", knowing full well her birthday is looming.

<g> Just remember that some Martins don't live up to their name - and
    some exceed it.

What Colin said up there ^
Some Martins are a bit iffy these days. Buy an older one from a
    reputable dealer.

The guy who looks after my guitars[1] has a couple of nice Martins.
He's got a nice 1940s OM-something or other that belonged to Patsy
    Cline and a 1930s 00-series.
But he isn't selling either of them.

I was at what used to be called "Sound Control" now called "PMT" (why??)
yesterday and spent a half hour playing a beautiful D28. A friend of mine
bought one last week (1600 quid I think he paid) at the same time as he
bought a 1957 Gold top Les Paul and both his Martin and the one at "PMT" are
truly playable guitars with a beautiful feel and sound.

The Martin next to the one I picked up was truly fucking AWFUL though. It
felt good, played well but sounded dreadful and on the face of it, it
should've sounded better because the D28 had a fairly robust gloss finish,
while the gash one was a simply oiled finsih and a better "vibrator".

Both had spruce tops and mahogany sides/back and rosewood 'boards, so I was
    more than a little surprised.

I can't be arsed to check, but I think the Newcastle one now has a
different name - it's either Soundcontrol or the other one!
