Is the correct abbreviation of administration below admin. or admin'? I
think it's the latter, SWMBO [1] thinks it's the former. Please tell me
    I'm not wrong again.

"I had hoped for both meetings to be on the night of the 12th and
wonder whether this could be an admin. error and my appointment with
you is in fact on the 12th?"

    or

"I had hoped for both meetings to be on the night of the 12th and
wonder whether this could be an admin' error and my appointment with
you is in fact on the 12th?"

[1] Currently doing an excellent impersonation of a bulldog chewing a
    wasp.

Even a grammar traffic warden could tell you that the apostrophe is wrong.
I wouldn't even bother with the full stop TBH.

    It's spelled "administration".

There Buzby, now you don't need to abbreviate it.

    You're welcome.

    <snip details>

Being a forrenner take my opinion with a pinch of salt but I think that :

    a) it's an admin. error rather than admin' (which makes no sense to me)
    b) it'd still be better to write the full word rather than abbreviate it
    c) I'd say it's an administrative error rather than an administration error

    You're wrong again.
Almost nobody bothers with a full stop to indicate an abbreviation
nowadays anyway. But the apostrophe is right out - last seen on
painted road markings and road signs, but nowhere else.

....in which case, it should be admi'n (ie "nistratio" cut out), which is a
horrid construction. The only way in which admin' could be correct would be
if it was a contraction of adming. Gah.

To indicate missing letters use a full stop at the end (e.g. e.g. for
exempli gratis) and an apostrophe in the middle (e.g. can't for cannot
or can not). So in this case admin..

If the final letter is the same as the final letter of the original
then it is a contraction and no punctuation required so yard becomes
    yd
If the final letter is not the same then it is an abbreviation and
requires a full stop so inch becomes in.

Is it? What about admin. and st.? Could they not be abbreviations?

Speaking of the Grammar police, a local cafe has opened up that has
three feral apostrophies in the big over-shop sign:

    Bus Stop Cafe

    Takeaway's Breakfast's Snack's.

Ill get a snap of it over the next few days and post a link - quality
    signwriting!
