Paging the German speakers

I appear to have forgotten most of what little German I knew, but I
remember enough to know that the online translators aren't giving me
what I want.

How would I say "Can you tell me how much it would cost to post these to
England, please?"?

 

IANARGS, but AFAICT the babelfish translation is fine. There are
perhaps better ways to say it, starting with dropping the "can you
tell me", and perhaps including what it is you want posting, rather
than just 'these', which is a construct that doesn't work so well in
German (but is still perfectly understandable).

Try cutting it down to "How much to send these to England?"

All that flowery waffle is so English.

 

Hmmm... using "send" instead of "post" seems to help, too: "Wie viel
würde es kosten, um die Bremsscheiben nach England zu schicken, bitte?"

Close enough, anyway.

 

Drop the 'um', but my german colleagues approve of 'schicken'. I've
always used 'posten', but my presence at the post office counter,
holding an addressed letter or parcel, probably renders the language
unneccessary anyway

Sure, we see it as polite, but in other languages, it's a waste of time.

 

Option a: "Könnten Sie mir bitte sagen wieviel es kosten würde, dies
hier/diese Bremsscheiben nach England zu schicken?"

Option b: "Das.<fx: points to an imaginary west and slightly upwards>
England. Wie viel?"


Regarding other posts, politeness is appreciated outside the UK as well, so
a nice expression comes a long way, particularly with Germans who like a
degree of formality in their conmunications.
