I've recently acquired a fat little volume entitled "Petit Mondain 1996".
It seems to be a list of people, principally in France. Does anyone know
what it is? My Google mojo seems to have gone a bit flaccid on this one.

It's a list of people in France who are 'important'. The word 'bottin'
is a colloquial word to describe a directory or a listing of someone or
something. 'Regarde dans le bottin, enfin!!' ('look in the phone book,
for ****'s sake...'). The adjective 'mondain' refers to 'monde' in
French, i.e. 'of the world' (as opposed to 'spiritual'). Indeed, a
quick glance in _Le Petit Robert_ ..

    So .. =~ 'Who's who'.

Napolean wasn't shy about making people into kings, dukes and other
stuff as a reward for services rendered. The revolution didn't abolish
the aristocracy, it just killed off all of those it didn't like. The
rest of them still retained their titles and "nobility".

FFS you don't expect me old eyes to see a tiny little ~ do you?

We could discuss at length how it differs from 'Who's who' but for
platy's purposes the approximation will suffice.

I have to be honest, and admit I have forgotten most of my 19th
    century European history.

It comes easy to Ace, though - actually being there at the time makes
it that much more memorable, apparently.
