French-registered car parked in our street - nothing unusual about that
but this one has RED plates with silver characters: two letters - three
numbers -two letters. What's that about then?

or, as DT is in the Channel Isles, a car bought in France "duty free for
export" and has yet to be registered in CI.

http://plaque.free.fr/f_e.html - bought prior to 10-04-2009 according to
    that website

which is the *old* scheme I referenced, nonextant since April 2009

ofnut's use of the words "nope" and "new" gave me the impression he was
    saying I was wrong.

Oh I wasn't commenting on your little private disagreement, just
picking the bits out from his link that explained the OP's question.

Babelfish, ****, can you use it?
The fl askin questions in this thread would have at least enough to
get the jist of that, given the context. It's not rocket science.

Scroll down a bit, below the police cars on the right.

Thank you all, it is the new temporary plate for vehicles in transit.
Left-hand drive though so may or may not be going to be registered here
in Jersey. Supplied by an outfit called Peugeot Open-Europe. Has French
insurance 'disc' on windscreen so may just be a visiting French family
(we're getting a helluva lot of them lately due to exchange-rate, I
    guess).

PSA (and probably others) do a scheme whereby 'merkins/Aussies/etc can
fly in, lease a brand spankin' car to their chosen spec for a couple of
months, then hand it back at the end. During that time, because it's in
the name of non-EU residents, it's on tax-free plates.

Manufacturer gets a near-new car for the approved-used sales stock.
Tourist gets transport much cheaper than a rental, with much less
restriction on where they can go.
    Everybody's happy.
