Of the french having time off for remembrance day. <specialist subject hat on> Both. In the seventh century AD, the church moved its All Saints' Day, a holiday for honoring early Christian martyrs, from a day in May to November 1, as part of its Pope gregory ordered plan of 'christianising' the pagan festivals. This to give a new spin to the old Samhain rituals of October 31. By the tenth century A.D., the Catholic Church had added a new holiday, All Souls' Day. This day was set aside to honor all of the hallowed dead, not just the early Christian Saints. Hence All Hallow's eve - Halloween. Remembrance day is 11/11 - the eleventh hour. I'm surprised you don't know that particular piece of history. But this day off is for the above. If the UK had stayed catholic no doubt we'd be off as well. Which is remembrance day - here we don't get the day off, everything defaults to remembrance sunday.
Des Nope, got bugger all to do with Rememberance day. It's an old left-footer holiday. Sounds good to me. It always amused me though that the 11th of November is start of the carnival season in Germany.
Although Remembrance Sunday is now wrapped in religion the 11/11/11 isn't of itself religious. I'm astounded you, or for that matter anyone else, is not aware of its significance. Minus several million points off your intelligence score there Des.
That'll be me *whooshed*, then. -- | Wik -UKRMHRC#10- 2003 R1150GSA -DC#1 -'FOT#0 'FOF #39 - BOD#12 BOB#12 |# You don't believe me | "Experience is the worst teacher. |That the scenery | It always gives the test first |Could be a cold-blooded killer. | and the instruction afterward." ***** human response from wik at blueyonder dot co dot uk *****
