There's a yogurt style product called Petit Filous, as I understand it this
means "little swindlers" [1]? Not a particularly confidence inspiring
    product name?

[1] Or have I got it wrong

It's 'swindler', but also a name given to a mischievous child. 'scamp',
    'rascal' .. whatever.

  6. "Rascal" will do just fine.

Nothing to do with Bedfords, btw.

  7. Silver Dung, actually, and yes, absolutely true.
I hadn't heard of that one, but the Chevy Nova of the 1970s bombed in
Latin America because 'no va' means 'doesn't go'.

The most recent one I know of is the Toyota MR2, which didn't sell too
well in France, and Toyota were mystified until someone told them that
    in French, 'Emmerdeux' means 'shitty'.[1]

In the 1980s, I was present at the Cannondale Cycles launch of their
little kid-carrying cycle trailer called, believe it or not, the Bugger.

I (and other easily-amused hacks) asked Cannondale why on earth they'd
named it so, and they said it was a combination of 'buggy' and 'trailer'
and the word 'bugger' didn't really exist in the American vocab.

Which prompted the question (which I asked) of what they did use to
    describe, well, buggery.

"We say 'anal intercourse'. We don't actually have a single word for it.
I guess we don't do it as much as you Brits..." was the reply.

    15-40 to Cannondale.

    [1] Or as near as.

I always thought it was 'cos MR2 sounded more like 'merde' when spelt
out in French. But then again, as always, ICBW.

  9. That'll be the mother of all whooshes, then.

    Try pronouncing MR2 in French.

Oh, never mind: here goes. Three syllables.

    1. Em
    2. Air
    3. Duh

  10. I'm sure that one was a miff, ISTR that "no va" was meaningless and
something like "niente va" was the correct phrase.

However, I am old and forget stuff.

No, you're correct. The word 'emmerdeux' doesn't in fact exist in
French. If you say the name of the car, it comes out as 'em-err-deux',
which again, means nothing. There _is_ an expression which could be
translated as 'oh, shit ..' and it's 'hé, merde!'. Write that out
phonetically, and it's probably not far from 'MR2'.

I hardly think pushing a word that doesn't exist in French, constitutes
    'whooshing' someone.
Which gives 'emmerdeux'. Which isn't a French word.

    Your point ?
