Was there some kind of a sports event on in France tonight, possibly a
    World Cup rugby match?

I might as well laugh now because I can't see me finding much to laugh
    about during tomorrows game.

I don't hear any horns blaring outside my house tonight.

I do have the urge to inscribe the number "4" in my neighbours(s) lawn
    though, now where's the weedkiller.....

What could be considered amusing is that the general strike including
transport was still on. Oh and France lost. That was a bummer, as I was
    rooting for them.

Didn't hear of any such thing. Did hear about some ceremony to
potentially show the Little Guy as the nation's savior, but that has
    been canceled.
Perhaps. The town where my office is is also hosting the Springbocks. I
have lately been trying to break their morale by riding around their
hotel with a very noisy(*) bike due to a broken header pipe. Not sure it
    will be sufficient.

(*) The place itself is called "Noisy", and the Honda dealership is
    called "Noisy Motor Bike".

Blimey, they're slumming it. Almost all of the hotels in Noisy are from the
Accor group. Novotel is the poshest of their brands there, IIRC.

    No idea.
Do we gather that France lost some sort of sporting event then? Shame.

I have no idea: all our non-essential electrical appliances are switched
    off on Friday evening.

What are "non essential" electrical appliances?

Is a computer an essential appliance?

Okay, so how do you still manage to post to usenet on a Saturday then?

(BTW this is not intended to start some kind of "you're not really
Jewish type thread, I am genuinely interested. I used to be involved
with house refurbishments for the Jewish community in Stamford Hill,
and found their approaches to overcoming certain restrictions of their
    religion quite inventive).

  14. Not according to the Sunday Times 21/10/07

"World Cup dream ends for England
Last night before the big screen behind the Eiffel Tower, tens of
thousands of English rugby fans died a slow, drunken death as France
    beat England 15 to 6 "

If they haven't seen their mistake it's at:

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/

Just saw it change at 9:45am. It was South Africa!

I wonder if some one just got their arse kicked into touch.

Chabbat isn't 'all day' Saturday. In Judaism, days begin at sunrise on the
'eve' of their 'secular' equivalent. So Chabbat started on Friday evening
(at 7:38 last Friday, off the top of my head), and ended last night at
approximately half past seven. I think I started posting a few minutes
    before 'havdala'.

Sucking his keyboard for inspiration, Dan L typed:
Which raises the question - why spend all that time inventing a religion
with restrictions built in, and then expend mountains of ingenuity getting
round them? Why not say "Hey, this religion doesn't suit us in 2007. Let's
    invent a new one."

That's not an anti-Jewish comment, BTW. All God-botherers of whatever
    stripe puzzle me.

Well we don't believe that it was 'invented' to begin with, but aside from
that, it isn't really a question of 'getting around [the restrictions]',
but of making sure that what we do doesn't violate them.

I'm not sure I see a great difference between "getting around" restrictions
and "making sure that what we do doesn't violate" them. There's a semantic
    nuance there that escapes me.

So life is like a sport, where there are rules that you can exploit but not
transgress. I just prefer to see life as a game of cricket. "Keep yore bat
strate boy, in criket as in life ..."

Take the consumption of dairy products with meat (which is forbidden). At
the school, for example, you won't find a dairy product in the canteen. At
all. They just don't buy them. So that isn't 'getting around' any
    restrictions; it's obeying them.

On the other hand, I try to inject a certain pragmatism into my daily life,
just as I keep an open mind here on UKRM. So for example, it's forbidden
to use electrical appliances on Chabbat which means that when we come back
from our Synagogue, we can't open the door to the building 'cos it uses a
code to unlock electrically. I'll be fucked if I'm standing in the street
waiting for someone to come along and open the door. So I open it.
