I trust you've looked at the cost of consumables and routine
    maintenance?

£12k to buy looks like a drop in the ocean if you need a new clutch and
exhaust system in the same year....

I still regret not buying a Merak SS when I had the chance instead of
the porker, but I know I would've regretted it more if I had bought it.

'bout 5 miles from Tesco is my guess. My Beemer does about 10mpg or less
on a short journey from cold so I'd be getting up there too if I used
that. I guess that's why it's currently sitting unused and SORNed in the
    garage.

I'm getting 19mpg on short town trips too, which is better than I
expected on gas. So a cost equivalent of 34mpg urban from a 2.4l petrol
    4x4 - can't be bad.

About seven miles, but you're in the ballpark. One such return trip
from cold and the needle moves. A second trip (without going anywhere
else in between, like) and suddenly that's more than five litres gone.
A trip to the motor factor to return a useless fiver's worth is
uneconomic in isolation, it'll have to wait until one of us goes past
    on another trip.

I'll have to either sort the CG out, then I can bat around without a
care, or find a way to banish the fuel burn guilt. Trouble is, the
Vectra does ~20 - 25mpg, the Bandit never better than 30 and the combo
25 to 30 on average. a bunch of diseconomical vehicles is not a good
    thing in these straitened times.

  9. This place has changed. Whatever happened to "The cost doesn't matter, it
    is motorcycling."

I thought you were going to live for the day?
Indeed, I am very much aware of that. Although pattern SS exhausts are
both better (less restrictive) and not so costly. As for clutch, *that*
one is a manual. It's the CC that can eat clutches *if* you drive it as
an auto. It's trivial to get the wear checked anyway.

I do hope you won't have come across this one ;)

The 3200 is a nicer looking car IMHO (those tail lights are to die for)
but they're all getting a bit long in the tooth now, and the 4200 was
    much more highly regarded.

    3200 are *really* cheap.

    There are limits!
ISTR manuals can eat clutches in 30k miles, though.... and they're over
    £2k to replace.

    Stainless exhausts are no cheaper.

Nice cars, but they make Alfas look like a Lexus in the reliability
    tables.

    +1.

I started 'proper' skiing back in my late 20's I think, but apart from
a few 1 or 2hr dry slope lessons, I didn't go to proper ski school at
all, so my progress was pretty slow. Not helped by generally only
being able to afford one week per year.

    1. Not everybody subscribed to that.

    2. I've never been able to subscribe to that.

    3. When was the last time you bought fuel? The breeze coming off the
whizzing monetary digits is enough to stir your moustache, these days -
as the volume digits click round singly.

And for those of us on a Local Govt pension that is supposed to be
index-linked, apparently the annual inflation rate from 09/09 and 09/10
was zero. Yeah, right. No increase, though, and that applies from
    09/10 until 09/11.
