Indeed. While I was there, one of Mr Champion's mates was buying an
Aprilia Dorsoduro 750. Gorgeous. If I'd not been thinking tourer I'd
have bought it in an instant.
Well, it's for the lad to sit on and he's a tad more like a mountain
    goat than T is.

I suppose I ought to do a sig change post

Well I think I have got that far. Of course, on the road, the bubble of
safety is always useful, but I take your point.
Far more likely to do IAM in the car, and then skid / track training for
    that reason.
    This is possibly a plan.

Proper gorgeous it was. It took all my resolve not to get intimate with it.

Champ's mate (who apparently races an MV) may have needed a step ladder
    to get on it though

Why not buy a box of bits that you could, eventually, rebuild? If you
wanted to, obviously - until then you still have a bike in the garage
but it would take up less space..

Indeed. The Shiver is more suitable for the vertically challenged.

    A purpose.

I didn't use the R-GS much for about 2 years. Partly due to a knee injury
but it was underused before then.

Now, most of my miles are compressed into one long trip each year and half
a dozen "Sunday rides". I did a short spell of commuting in 2009/10 but
    stopped last autumn.

I get so much enjoyment out of a one or two week trip into Europe that it's
certainly worth keeping the bike. Especially as it is 10 years old and
hardly costs me anything in depreciation now.

I've already allocated time and made plans for a trip in Sept this year. If
I end up going alone then so be it as I've got a couple of UKRM ex-pat
visits lined up along the way and a weekend with non-UKRM friends in
    Normandy at the end.

I do wonder if I will replace the R-GS once it is too frail to make a 2000
mile trip. As that is likely to be somewhere around 2030 the availability
of a suitable fuel might have an influence...

Sadly touring on bikes has no appeal. SWMBO certainly won't.

A brit bike in boxes. Then you can go to autojumbles wearing the
    correct
gear 'looking' for that never to be found left hand thread ninge wheel
and still get to believe that you are a biker.

Oh Dear. You've never touched the face of god then?
What then is it you like about being a biker - the perception other
    people
have of you , the self image of rebellion , non-conformity?

I can't do beach/sit on arse holidays. So, I'd do the touring even if I
didn't own a bike. My lad seems to enjoy touring type holidays too, so I've
done a few fly-drives into various EU destinations and trips in my own car.

Beat me to it, but the bike doesn't have to be a) Brit, or even b) in
    boxes, but either way works.

Something to fettle, or just polish bits of. Maybe a rideable project
even, though I don't know whether it'd be worth the cost & hassle of
    the associated bureaucracy.

    Skiing.

Awesome three hours this afternoon, skiing with a two-time Everest
climber who did her BASI course with Jude last year.
    http://www.cathyodowd.com/
She managed to keep up with me on and off piste, so I've no idea how
    she skis, except 'fast'.

One of the reasons I've started reading UKRM again is because the bikes
have sat in the garage unused for far to long and UKRM reminds me why I
started biking in the first place.

OK, that's enough for a diagnosis.

Cane had a Fireblade. He enjoyed riding it. He enjoyed posing on it. He
fancied something a bit more practical, so he got a Blackbird. It was a
hugely competent bike but he never seemed to ride it. Riding didn't
really seem worth the effort. There were other things to do. He thought
    about selling it.

CT had a ZX9R. He enjoyed riding it. He fancied a change, so he got a
ST1050. It was a hugely competent bike but he never seemed to ride it.
Riding didn't really seem worth the effort. There were other things to
do. He thought about selling it.

I told CT time and time again that if he didn't really feel like riding
the bike he had in the garage the problem was simple: he had the wrong
bike. CT sold the ST, bought a Busa and now enjoys riding again.

Cane sold the Blackbird and now he has a car. And a horse.

It's like a choose-your-own-adventurer where you get to be Cane or be
CT. Hobson's choice, I know, but it's your choice too.

I had a Firestorm, an FJ1200 and a Tiger 955 in the garage, and I
always used the Armstrong, it was just so much more challenging/fun to
    ride.
Ye fucking gods, what a choice.
