Few airlines give "free" food on short haul flights now.

Really? BA, and Bulgaria do every time we fly.

Of course that might be 'medium' haul, I spose.

Free booze on BA as well.

It's called cutting your coat to suit your cloth, as my mother and
    father would say.

Short haul economy on BA is a bag of bar snacks and a beer.

Go in front of the curtain and it's a cheese & pickle sarnie. Plus all
the bags of mini hobnobs you can snaffle from the lounge before
    boarding, natch.

    wessie wibbled forthrightly:
Depends. In some of the major players such as AF or Air Italia, you do
get something. In cattle class, I wouldn't feed WUN's pigs with it, but
    it is free.

Well coming full circle, avoiding criticism that seems to be levelled at me,
I started out by inferring that the QoS that most of the posters in this NG
have come to expect is a jolly sight more than median income. Driven in
large part by an outrageous tax burden/system. And they would
struggle/cry/fail to downsize to a household income of £25k gross, never
    mind £12k.

  10. That's assuming she needs to work. Actually, working is a *good* thing
    - helps to prevent sitting at home wishing she was back in blighty.
This. Especially as US work contracts are essentially worthless.
Ensure it has a continuation of service clause that states your
original employment date will be used for future calculations (holiday
    accrual, severence etc).
Move both ways, including all air and ocean freight, taxes, temp
accomodation, flights - several scouting missions, return home visits
and final return home flight. Temp accomodation on the way home while
all your worldly belongings are in transit.

It might be cheaper to leave your bulkiest furniture at home and buy
new stuff (or rent furnished) in the US - worth considering to reduce
    the hassle factor.
and start the GC process immediately, even if you don't believe you'll
use it. By the time you have the opportunity to stay, or have fallen in
love with the place, it'll be too late to start.
Ask? Insist! I managed to run rental cars for 11 months in the end.
US based company credit card and phones too.
This x10. Have it paid for by the company, as it's a royal pain in the butt.

  11. I took mine with me, which meant I had more than my boss.
Address issues, not to mention paying currency conversion fees.

I'm not here as an internal transfer, I'm here with a GC because my wife
is a US citizen. And yes, you'll find that places that send you on
assignment for a couple of years actually might offer this.
Expensive != not covered. It's just expensive...
They work here, but the point is that with the US Amex, they'll start
building a credit history here rather than in the UK.

Most companies won't do that, though.

Knowing the shit you usually eat[1], I think any of your culinary
    suggestions can safely be ignored!

[1] I'll allow last night's pork belly as good, though.

FWIW, I think you should try to do it, if for no other reason than to
ride the roads of NorCal. More than enjoyable, they'll have you
    giggling.

I find the breakfast is alright, so long as you stick to the bacon rolls
    and the hash browns.

But hash browns are the work of the Devil!

The only potato-based product that is valid for breakfast is
    bubble-and-squeak.
