    Many != all

And I genuinely pity your mate. There's a big difference going *down* to
that level as compared to getting *up* to it.

I know a few folks trying to raise young families an median and below
    incomes and it isn't pretty.

That's why I believe that govmints should have no ability to place taxes on
products etc and we should have a personal flat tax system with an
appropriate threshold value. At todays money that might be 12k, perhaps 18k
    for a couple with kids.

Well, either that or you haven't thought it through very much.

You reckon the right-to-buy thing wasn't a transparent attempt by the
tories to buy working class votes then?

I used to pay all the household expenses so she had the £700 a month and
whatever she earned from her job, not very well paid, probably about
    £900 a month.

Saying that she didn't/doesn't live an extravagant lifestyle and even
with three kids to feed and clothe I'm at a loss to explain where the at
times £1600 a month disappeared to.

Anyway it's all moot now as I've got to pay my own living expenses so
can no longer pay all the bills for the matrimonial home. Although I'm
still covering half the mortgage. The kids don't appear to be starving
and the heating, electricity and internet all appear to be getting paid.

I thought we were talking about the reasons for excessive property prices
    and inadequate supply?

FWIW local authorities were evidently never capable of managing/providing a
decent service. But some Housing Associations obviously are.

When I lived in Oxford as a BT bigwig with an Optom wife working 3 days I
    still didn't feel "wealthy" although I realise I was. I think it's a
"family" thing. Big houses, nannys et all expand to suck up all available
    resources.

You surely don't think that you'd have qualified for a council flat do
    you?

Average annual house price increase by decade (Nationwide's figures):

    70's - 16.2%
    80's - 12.1%
    90's - 1.7%

So if you're going to link prices to council house sales, it appears
Maggie actually slowed down the increase.

You don't need big houses or nannies - those are on a want list, not a
    need list.

Everyone qualified for a council house, just personal circumstances
dictated how low on the list you were

OK... "You surely don't think that you'd have been allocated a council
    flat do you?"

    Better?

    No.

But the shortage of public housing stock puts more pressure on private
    stock, pushing up rents.

It used to be just for food and probably entertainment, which is why I
used it for the 25K living example. I covered all the other household
expenses including cars, road tax, insurance, petrol, clothing etc.

Although since the split it's become maintenance. Clearly the proportion
going on food has been dramatically reduced, otherwise the gas and
    electric wouldn't be getting paid.
