It was bearable in Malta and not too bad in the private hospital here.
What RSCH served my father even WUN's porkers would have refused.

I enjoy shopping for food. Especially if I get to go to a proper
    butchers.

I think, next to bikes/bike bits that food shopping is my next
    favourite thing.
Well, I also guess that I buy stuff where I approve of the animal
husbandry involved; basically all 'organic' would increase the cost.

I do enjoy good quality ingredients and perceive benefit; but this is
something I could pass on if I didn't have the money.
Not sure. I think he dribbles a lot though.

This wasn't about 'D', it was about your suggestion.

But it doesn't change my view that deliberately 'going on the dole' to
avoid supporting your family is a despicable thing to do.

  6. Quite. Both remind me of school grub and a blast of nostalgia for
overcooked cabbage, chewy chicken, watery greens and lumpy mash is ok
    for a short while.
Actually, I jest - the majority of hospital food I've had (and I've had
a fair bit of it) is quite ok. Nothing great, but edible enough.

  7. Much of the moaning comes about because it's the form to do so.
When I visited a mate in hospital he moaned about the grub, but shut up
when I reminded him that at home, he cooked up some right swilly
concoctions for himself, so had no room to criticise.

  8. Aha.
I once went on the dole to avoid supporting the Vatman.
    Does that count?

  11. In a typical month I spend zero on wine and beer so as I am an entirely
reasonable person of course such behaviour could be expected ;-)

It's certainly an important trait of American _culture_, but I'm not
sure it's so true of American people. People who have money have to
find things on which to spend it, but I think most people are pretty
savvy about advertising. I never look at ads in the paper and I don't
pay attention to ads on TV, unless they're creative. Even then, I
don't pay attention to the product. We are inundated with ads for
little crap that no one uses - "Call now and get the 2nd for FREE!" I
don't know anyone who actually succumbs to those ads - the success
rate must be 1 in 10,000, but if you pay attention to the ads, you'd
think everyone is buying them. Teenagers are a huge driver in the
economy, and they're susceptible to anything, but by the time
adulthood comes and you actually have to pay for stuff yourself, I
think most people have built a shield against the "more, more, more"
    mentality.
I dunno, maybe it's that I grew up in the hippie era that reacted so
harshly to the materialism of the 50's, but no one I know is craving
    more stuff.

And what's the impact on the children in all of this?

Seriously; you have children and then you have a responsibility to
provide for the next 20 or so years.

All this 'go on the dole' bollocks is just not something that should
    be done.

You position yourself as a man who needs at least 80k to live in York
or wherever and yet... you're encouraging others to put children in a
position where they have to live off social security.

    Disgraceful.

We've done all this before. People have different ideas of
    discretionary, and indeed, running costs.

While I have utterly no desire to try it again, I used to live on that
kind of money for years. And looking around the country it will be seen
that vast swathes of population prove that living on that kind of money
    is eminently possible.

They wouldn't call it 'existing' either. In fact, I suggest that many of
them would be quite offended by the such a suggestion.

I didn't suggest he shouldn't support his children, not that I know
    age/quantity.
I have a very simple reply to my ex on this subject. You want custody (and
control), you pay. I'd rather have him here. I pay. Quid Pro Quo

D's posts gave me the impression the ex was claiming as much as possible and
to a level he thought unfair

I suggest housing expenses make a huge difference. I know people who get by
very comfortably on median income, but they inherited very nice places to
live or the funds to acquire, debt free. Inheritance irks me not a little.
To set out to buy or rent somewhere worth living with average savings and no
parental feather bedding looks pretty tough (to me).

I have frequently since I've been a poster to this newsgroup, and my
quality of life hasn't suffered for it either. I bought my Versys brand
new when I was earning less than that much.

I'm happier when I'm skint tbh.
