Partly that, and partly my impression that the BoB tends to be rougher
than the others. Maybe I'm wrong.

    History suggests not!

And many a yachtie who normally keeps close to land skirts out round it on
    the way to the Med.
Easy to see why the Atlantic swell throws itself up in the area.

Does that include the fixed annual costs (insurance, MoT & tax)?
And if you hire something that does the job, 15-20 a day if that.

One reason the Bay of Biscay has a slight reputation with yachts is that
there aren't many places to hide if it all goes pear-shaped part way
    down.

Not sure. Certainly I've been in storms there, but the North Sea's not
exactly renowned for being millpond-calm all the time.

Could you perhaps take the pills *before* getting on the ferry, with
say a sandwich, to get the ball rolling?

Yes, obviously, & that's what I do on short crossings. Doesn't help
much when the pills wear off a few hours into a 36 hour crossing though.

That's no good. I suppose as compensation you can be UKRM's own
Tesco-value B.A.Baracus, with boats instead of aeroplanes.

That's certainly conventional wisdom. As swells roll across the Atlantic,
there's not much to stop the waves. Hence the bounty of good surf in
Western France. Not quite Portugal's standard though, which has the off-
    shore topology.

The problem is that she *really* doesn't like ferries and I know that a
long crossing would prey on her mind and take the edge off the whole
trip for her. So we won't do it.

Tell her you are renting a small yacht and I've agreed to Skipper it down
    for you.

This is a calculation I often do before embarking on the trip to 'the
chateau'. It helps to have a large estate car with three people and a
load of chattels on the outward journey which are replaced with
desirable comestibles on the inward leg. If going for more than a few
days the car hire is often the deciding factor even if flying out of
    budget airline peak periods.

We are quite prepared to use a pikey Etap as an overnight stop as their
family rooms suit us and the journey is just that, not part of the
    holiday.

As Krusty says, if you have a car anyway the fixed annual costs are
already accounted for. The high mileage does induce eye watering
    depreciation though.

I made a tactical error going back to petrol, even at a pretty fair high
30's to the gallon average, but at least I shouldn't have to lash out
for a new turbo and DMF.

Each trip uses up two 39 quid frequent traveller Eurotunnel slots, two
Etap nights 100 (though sometimes coming back I do it in one leg) and
1500 miles worth of juice (say 200). So a total of under 500 quid. I
would be struggling to do that by Ryanair in the holidays for three
people and a hire car for a minimum of a week.

Fortunately, one two week let in high season recoups all the travelling
costs of a trip anyway, and we usually get more bookings than that.

Of course WUN and Mrs WUN would be welcome to drop in on their way down
or back if we are in residence, but we are probably not quite far enough
south to make a good staging post. IIRC other UKRMers are better
    located.

There you go. £480 already and you have tyres, servicing and extra
    depreciation.

The fixed costs I was ignoring.

It is very easy to "forget" these costs. Put them off. But eventually there
comes a reckoning. For me it was realising how much 45,000 in 4 years with a
911 had *actually* cost me. And apart from tyres that's a canny vehicle to
maintain. In something like a big Merc, god only knows (there is no Ged).

Yes until you migrate from "hiding it in a company" to "straight out of the
    current account"

Running something like an SL500 from taxed net personal income is akin to
    buying into the RCC.

It makes a lot more sense to buy the luxo barge at 3 years old after
someone else has paid the depreciation.
