... of the wall/rock face variety.

Im thinking about giving it a try, see what its like etc.
How does one get started in this? Is it expensive? I've seen those
indoor walls on tv so presume there must be a few around london
somewhere. Are there beginners courses in climbing etc?
Can anyone recommend any places to go around london?

I know it's not london, but try the head for the hills festival in
ambleside, lake district, coming in june (good roads, natch). They'll
have just about any outdoors related activity you can think of to try
    out. www.hfth.co.uk

Milton keynes xscape has a big climbing shop, with a good wall, and a
couple of those climbing treadmill type thingies.

Find a convenient friend who's interested in climbing, and get him to
teach you how to do it. Works for me.
Not really. You can hire the equipment you need to start with (boots and
harness), then buy it once you decide you like it.

Once you get into it, you can spend as much as you like on shiny
anodised alloy things... then get them scratched to buggery by sticking
them into small gaps in a big piece of rock.
    There's loads. Ummm... http://www.ukclimbing.com/ has a searchable
    database of climbing walls.
Yes, definitely. But if you happen to already know someone that goes
climbing, that's probably better. And, obviously, cheaper.
Nope. It's all a bit darn Sarf for me.

Bit late to this thread, but still...

Try the Youth Hostels Association (yha.org.uk)
They offer activity breaks (weeks or weekend), discount for members.
Temporary membership part of the deal.
