Need to get into Kingswood for 8.30-9am tomorrow, which is a real PITA.

I have a plan that involves the old Severn Bridge, past Thornbury Golf
Club, then use the A38 / B4059 and A432 through Downend to get there.

Adds about 5 miles to the usual M32 J3 route, but does it potentially
cut out all the queueing traffic from before the M5 junction all the way
    to the M32?

Bike or car? Actually the answer's the same - M32 every time. I do that bit
of the journey every day (albeit slightly earlier) and unless the queueue is
backed up onto the M4 AND I'm on the bike, I avoid the A38 like the plague.

At 8am, the queue will be backed up onto the M4 and more than likely all
the way back to the M5 junction.

I'll be in the car - kind of tempted to take the bike, but not sure how
that would sit with my employers, given that they provide me with a
    company car.

Sorry my mistake, if the queue is backed up the M4 onto the M5 is what I
should have written. At 8am the queue on the M4 is slow but does move once
you leave the M5 area, then slows again just before the M32. The A38 is just
    hopeless in a car.

I assume you're taking the car?

The main problem with the M4/M32 junction is all the good little commuters
queuing in an orderly fashion in lane 1. My normal approach is to stay out
in the fast lane until the junction actually begins, then punch across as
the traffic spreads out. Once through that bottleneck, it's relatively
    plain sailing.

If you want to take to the roads, then yes, follow the B4461 up to Alveston
to join the A38, go south for about a mile to the Rudgeway lights and peel
off left onto the B4427. After another mile, you'll enter a 50 limit and
shortly thereafter turn right onto what is still the B4427. This is a
narrow, fast, twisty, challenging rat-run. After about 3 miles, you hit the
traffic lights on the B4057. Turn left here, then immediately get into the
outside lane and turn right to rejoin the B4427 for the last mile. The end
of this bit is slow, as all the traffic is queuing to turn right onto the
B4058. This you must also do, as the B4058 will take you to the lights on
the Avon ring road, just along from the M32 Jn3.

If you're heading back the same way before 1PM, you should drop in for
    coffee.

    I've tried this one before.

Usually sneak onto the M32 at around the 100 yard marker.
    Not like this, then?

    Sadly not - I'm there until 5pm.

Which means a repeat of the hassle coming back out.

Was in Bristol on Thursday, too - Winterstoke Road.

Thought I'd dodged all the traffic coming out, but got stuck for over
half an hour queueing to get onto the M5 at Gordano.

    Snip

You might be ok going across to Yate but going to Yate in the evening is a
right pig. I would presume the reverse journey in the morning will be as
well. BICBW I've only done the outward journey a few times.

Not quite the way I'd have done it. On roads like that, you're averaging
35-40 if you're lucky, and you're going further. On the motorway in heavy
traffic, you're averaging 55-60. Seriously, M4, M32, Fishponds junction and
turn left. If you're that worried about the traffic, just set off half an
hour earlier. You'll be sitting there, "working" on your laptop when the
    boss arrives.
