you didn't look at the full list, then? Some slightly better choices.

    Since you've mentioned the subject - I can't recommend David Mitchell's
    "Cloud Atlas" enough.

It's overrated and the first two thirds are as dull as dish water.

No, but if you're trying to encourage others to read, I wouldn't start
    there.

This an important point. If you're going to get a non-reader (so to
speak) to pick up the reading habit you need to hook them with something
interesting that they'll want to read before moving onto something more
    challenging.

Personally I'd recommend the series of books by J K Rowling.

Has anyone read The Geographer's Library by Jon Fasman?

    Is it bad *children's* literature?

I thought it rather immature stuff when I was 11 but
I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

I tried, but the ending of L'andranger 47 - Shepton Mallet and Yeovil'
was a complete let-down, so I gave up on the rest of the series.

    Now they *are* tedious books.

A friend recommended that to me a couple of weeks ago. It is now
sitting on my "to read" pile.

I don't think we're talking about the same book. The Geographer's
Library is Jon Fasman's first book.

My irony-sensor for missed that one. So tell me, why is there, "no such
    thing?"

This from the bloke who reckons there is such a thing as "incorrect
    usage" in language.
If only one could be bothered to care.

I found The Hobbit rather enjoyable, but can't read LOTR as it is too
    tedious.
