Eh? He wrote Contact in 1986. Those things were well known by then
    and had been for years.

  2. Liked that
Liked that even more. More thought-provoking than the film
Utter crap. Badly written and boring - the TV was better.

    All IMHO, naturally.

  3. Indeed. Apparently Nature reviewed it, and only found a few minor errors
in it too, which is impressive.

  4. The new Flashman book. In fact, if you've never read any of them,
    absolutely any Flashman novel.

  5. That's a catholic assortment. Agree about The Cruel Sea. Have you ever
read Life Is A Four Letter Word? NM's autobiography.

It rocks a big fat one.

Speaking of which; "Choke" by Chuck Palahniuk, "Trainspotting" by Irvine
Welsh and "Vurt" by Jeff Noon.

The Older Gentleman scribbled on the back of a napkin:
I'd certainly go with that - "Flashman and the Dragon" had me in
    stitches...

    Foucault's Pendulum - Umberto Eco
    The English - Jeremy Paxman
Notes from a Small Island - Bill Bryson
    High Fidelity - Nick Hornby

Liked all of the above, especially Bryson's book.

That's high praise indeed! Actually, from the synopsis on Amazon it
    seems a fair description.

I like the look of it. Generally I'm drawn to books which broaden my
understanding of the perspective of others or that deal with social
    issues.

A truly classic book I borrowed from my Dad earlier this year (written about
1955). You enter a world which seems real and you become part of the ship
    and its crew.

Still not finished the Eco, but agree with the rest.

High Fidelity is ideal holiday reading. I'd add another recommendation
    for The Time Travellers Wife.

I'm currently reading 'Wicked' by Gregory Maguire. First couple of
    pages here.

  17. And a good film, too, with Jack Hawkins and Donald Sinden. The film was
toned down a bit from the book, mind.

You ought to try some of Monsarrat's short stories, especially HMS
    Marlborough Will Enter Harbour.

If the author wants to sell more books then he _really_ should take down
    that web-page.
