When my 996 threw it's chain and split the cases it had just had the
tyre replaced in there. John Sirret signed off that the chain had been
well cared for and properly adjusted so Ducati carried £4000 worth of
    repairs.

    You headin' over on Sat?

I'm over until Wednesday. Then again I have Monday free in London,
there must be at least one decent bike dealer in London.

More or less what I thought when I was looking. However, I decided to
keep the 750SS and buy a full-on tourer as well, hence the Trophy 1200.

I also see your remarks about quality elsewhere in the thread. It
pretty much mirrors my own impression of my 750SS. A few, a very few,
fasteners corrode (the ones that join the two halves of the fairing
under the engine are particular culprits). For the rest, it's a quality
product. The paintwork is *excellent*, and the quality of the alloy
    just as good.

Unbelievably, there's been no brake piston corrosion at all. My local
Ducati specialist says he has no idea what Ducati (OK, Brembo) make
their brake pistons out of, but they never seem to corrode and seize.
Switchgear is Japanese, and there really is no component that says:
"This was made on the cheap".

If I had to name niggles, I'd pick out the wheels - they deform easily
when bumped and I've had both of them straightened, but then Ducati are
far from alone here. It would be nice to have adjustable span levers,
but then this was the budget sports bike. Suspension is basic in the
extreme, but it works and the thing handles exceptionally well. Oh, and
there's a near total absence of drive line shock absorption so chains
are short lived - but longer-lived than on, for example, a 600 bandit.

Mileage now approaching 27k, which is intergalactic for a Ducati, it
    seems.

Actually, the Trophy is pretty well built too. The last Jap bike I had
was the 900 Diversion and you could see where the cost accountants had
been at work on that, like the exhaust (nice chrome where you could see
it: poorly plated metal where you couldn't.) Poor alloy finishing. Thin
paint. Quick-seize calipers. Pretty short-lived suspension.

I did a lot of miles (South of France, Italy) two up with Givi
panniers on a ZZR11, and while it is wide, I never really found it a
problem. ZZRs make enormously capable tourers imo.
    This I can't comment on. I'm fairly sure I've seen mega-flip up
    screens on ZZRs, tho.
Well, the ZZR deffo meets this requirement - 100mph is approx 6k revs
(Loz: I think the redline is at 11k, not 12k).

What's a thousand revs between friends? As Doc Gower used to say, the
rev limiter tells you when to change up.

To be fair, tho, the Divvy was always a low-cost, low quality machine,
so I don't think your experience with it can be applied across the
    board to jap bikes.

My Gixxer has done 28k miles now, and while it looks shit cos of two
drops, everything continues to work amazingly well.

Heh.... possible. I'd have to consult with Katie first, though.

Anyway, shouldn't you be seeking permission from those with crash space
before inviting other people along ;-)
