True, but we're talking things akin to people trying to scan a document
by pressing it against their monitor.

A bit foolish upgrading to a new operating system without backing up all
    your data!

Not trying to defend Apple or anything but users have to share a bit of the
    responsibility.

Mine too. If it's broke, it doesn't get released.

  5. And which part of "from a non-Mac" did you miss?

I only have 1 Mac so I was trying to get at it from my (afp-enabled)
    linux box.

"New Mac" "non-Mac" Can you see a subtle difference?

<straight bat> In all honesty, that should be pretty high up the list,
together with talking to the mouse and breaking the 'cup holder'

Oh, I assumed you were trying to restore the backup to a Mac that had
    had the logic board replaced.

Seems that it only happens if you do an OS upgrade then log on with the
guest account the first time after re-start.

Which would be a slightly odd thing to do.

If you use your normal user or admin account for the first log-on, then
    nothing bad happens.

I'm not sure that's 100% true, but CBA to google.

  13. Me too. I'm running out of reasons not to ditch the last windows
    machine in the house.
    well, quite.

I've got to get around to doing the Snow Leopard upgrade shortly...

  15. Well yes. I'm toying with the idea of seeing if I can get a virtual
copy of leopard running on my virtualisation server.

But I suspect I won't bother. I don't play as much with IT at home as I
    used to.

  16. There isn't a media centre equivalent that I want to use; so I'll
probably built a Windows7 Atom based media centre at some point when the
3 year old XP based one has to be replaced.

Apple TV running from a large iTunes library (more than 300 movies plus
50+ series of TV shows- around 750GB) is pretty good (all content stored
redundantly on a drobo share). I certainly don't want to repeat the
ripping of content and manual typing of metadata.

  17. Never hacing had a media centre, I suppose I don't know what I'm
    missing.

    But...
....I do have Apple TV, and think it's super.
Very slightly annoying that iTunes doesn't have a built-in converter
    to take mpg/avi/wmv to mp4

  18. Well, basically you can record any crap on TV and then watch it at your
leisure. Or more likely end up with a couple of TB of TV that you don't
watch... but could if you wanted to.
Me too; especially they way it just integrates with the media library
    running on my Mac Mini.
Well, yes. But Handbrake has this (at least it will rip DVDs) what I'd
like to do is figure out how to easily rip the progs that my Windows
Media Centre box records to an mp4 format so I can store them with the
films etc. on the drobo share containing my media librarary.
