I can't see them doing much more than formation beat-ups and a chandelle or
three, possibly with smoke. Inverted spins, Cubans and flick rolls would be
    right out.
No plans yet. May be doing some sidecar aeros - tail slides, half rolls,
    stall turns, inverted loops...

And highly valued it is too.

Now, all we need is a professional assassin. Where would we find one
    of those?

  7. You do let the turbo run down after a run on boost? The worst thing
[1] for a turbo is a fast motorway trip followed a quick swerve into a
motorway services then engine off immediately.

I'm not sure I believe that. I used to switch my turbo off straight
away all the time (even *gasp* after an extremely rapid push to
Newquay; "we stopped only for fuel"). It was fine, up to when I sold
    it, with 130K on it.

AOL. Mine's fine after 85000 miles of such usage as well. Mind you.
mine's a Volvo; Andy has a Fiat. Could there be some connection, do
    you think?

You were lucky. The residual heat in a turbo that's been worked hard
will do horrible things to the oil sitting in the bearings. My old
porker had an electric pump that pushed coolant through the turbo
housing for a couple of minutes after switching off for just that
    reason.

Well, you say that, but 130K isn't "lucky", for goodness sake. You'd
think with the scaremongering about letting the turbo cool down, that
    they blow every 10K.
    But apparently it didn't.

So where do we stand now?

Heh, true enough. They probably think it's not worth it as they know
the car will be a rusting heap long before the turbo dies.
This is true. And when it does go, it's just a good excuse to fit a
    bigger one anyway.

The class 59 locomotives run continuously. The instructions were if we
should shut the engines down for any reason we couldn't take the main
battery switches out for 35 minutes as the turbos had electric oil pumps
to keep them lubricated as the spun down.

Having said that all the other locos didn't have that pansy nonsense and
didn't get through /too/ many turbos....

I've mentioned this before I'm sure.

The turbo in the Passat is fine on 135k miles, don't know if the
previous owners looked after it, but I drive the last mile or so off
    boost as a precaution.

In the case of Andy's Fiat, it's most likely not been allowed to cool
off before switching off the engine - not the fault of Fiat, as the
turbo will be an off-the-shelf job from a major turbo manufacturer
    anyway.

My Renault 21 Turbo used to really glow brightly after a run, that was a
tweaked turbo engine. I don't know how many miles it had done since it's
rebuild and tweak before I got hold of it though, but I always used to
do a couple of cool down miles even though it had a turbo timer on it
that used to run for about 5 minutes.

It wasn't the turbo. The car has been treated to new plugs and a new coil
    and seems to be fine.

Unless the garage have philanthropically slipped a new turbo in without
    mentioning it and without charging.

Either way, my car now goes "zooooom" again.

Cool. Coil packs can be an issue for Fiat, had to replace a couple on
the Cinq. when we had it. Only about 30 quid each anyway, and they don't
fail as often as they do on VAG products.

Now you really have lost it. You seriously belive that Italian electrics
    are superior to German?

I'll have you know that I have never had a coil pack go wrong on my 65K
mile Golf, and neither have any of my colleagues who drive identical
    cars to mine.

I'd suggest you google for 'VAG coil pack failure', then.

They had a whole batch a few years ago that left owners without their
cars for weeks at a time whilst a non-defective batch of packs was
    produced.
