If I can find a picture of Morpeth, the answer is yes.

  2. Quite a few shunters lost legs doing this, I think.

I recall seeing some docu which included BR film from the 60s about the
huge gravity shunting yard they had somewhere in the Midlands.
Impressive stuff it was, with a central control tower guiding the wagons
into dozens of sidings with trackside braking applied automatically.

They also showed what it's like today - totally derelict.

  4. I was reading 'Supership' by Noel Mostert recently; in which he
describes how, in the middle of a huge expanse of ocean, two ships seem
to inexplicably and inexorably get drawn together. On the voyage he
covers in the book, Europe to the Gulf via Cape Town, it happened twice,
    afair.

Didnt a ship run into that 'new car carrying ship' that capsized in the
    English Channel last year?

  6. Heh. In the book, the author describes an incident in the English
Channel in which the master of a supertanker took over the watch from
the bloke in charge at the time and quite deliberately drove the ship
the wrong way up the lane of the Channel in the face of oncoming
    shipping.

I sunk a bathtub on her maiden voyage across the local lake - does
    that count?

It's the melon on stick film they use to show that frightened me.
Imagine Henry Cooper thinking bike, but with shunters and trains.
That's Toton yard, the hump closed early 80's IIRC. Where they hump
shunt, unsurprisingly, which is altogether another kettle of wagon
    related japes.
