Due to neighbour complaining about 'leaves on his lawn'[1], I've lopped
a couple of biggish branches off a wild cherry tree we had in the front
    garden.

I chopped them up for firewood - I think they'll burn in the woodburner,
but then I remembered an earlier post.

Bits any use to you for turning? What kind of size pieces - I've a few
longer bits left and they vary from about 2 to 10 inches in diameter.

Coo! Oh yes, please. Decent lengths of 10" diameter cherry would be
very nice indeed. Smaller diameter longer lenghts are very welcome,
too. Transport might be a bit questionable, though.

    What's a decent length?

One with the letters in the correct order, to start with. Bah!

Anyway - six inches minimum, I struggle for inspiration with flat
discs, TBH. The longer the better, as far as I'm concerned (he says,
boldly) but that does of course, presume that you haven't already made
it 'easier to carry' as everybody seems to do.

When I've got my arse in gear and rebuilt my lathe-supporting bench in
sleeper timbers with hefty brackets and all bolted together, I've got
an interesting project or two in mind, that will have to be undertaken
in sections due to limited lengths, which is a bit of a PITA. I did
manage to score a carful of cherry wood last year, which had just been
felled and left, which was excellent: if as much as I could do to get
    it into the car.

The bench and supports have to be hefty to allow me to turn 'outboard',
with the workpiece at 90 degrees to the lathe, rather than in line with
it as normal. This will be for base sections, that will come from a
beech tree felled by pikeys who would rather struggle with heaving the
chunks around rather than waste time and fuel making it easy to handle,
which is all grist to my mill: 18" diameter two-foot lengths are far
    more inspirational.

*Cough* erm, well, see that bit in my original post where it says "I
chopped them up". Of course it wasn't until afterwards that I
remembered. They're mostly longer than 6", I'll save you some of the
    straightest/best bits.

I have a mate who works for forestry Commission, I'll have a word see
if he can find anything useful, won't be until after the weekend though.

I'll try to remember to ask .. ;)

Anything is welcome, if it's a decent size, or has 'interest' like
burrs, or lots of branch junctions that produce 'wild' grain or best of
all, the bole, the swelling in the trunk that sits at the junction with
the ground. Telegraph pole-straight pines don't really flick my switch
    the way fruit wood does.

Oh so bits sticking out of the side are good - hadn't thought of it that
way. Never done any wood turning see (well maybe a toothpick or
    something at school).

Is the bit behind the saw of any interest to you?

    http://www.brunel.ac.uk/~eesridr/felled.jpg -- I'm pretty sure it's still
lurking in the grass (I abandoned the backyard after the grass grew so high
when I was away at CERN for 3 months in the summer of '07), weathered for
    a bit over four years. It's Ceanothus(sp?). Close-up:

    http://www.brunel.ac.uk/~eesridr/treerings.jpg

It had been espaliered against the garden wall when I bought the
house. I let it grow free and it had ballooned out until a storm in
January '07 blew it down -- effectively the roots were espaliered too so
no strength to winds from across the wall.

It was bloody effective, I'll tell you! A power saw didn't work
well (spending a lot more for a chain-saw might have helped) but that
little ripsaw made short work of cutting up the tree.

I needed prescription codeine for the back pain the next day, mind...

BOSM's this weekend, isn't it? Bit of a short notice to get someone
to swing by North Heathrow tomorrow and UR it to Hulland Ward, I guess.

How long is it? I'm going to HW via Denham, Bucks, so if it'll strap
across the seat of a CB13 I'll pick it up tomorrow lunchtime if it'll
    help.

Hi Nick; it's 60 cm long, 12 cm across the glans and 30 cm
    across the bollox.

Denham is just a few km north of here.
