[Sorry if this duplicates; the original isn't showing up ATM] No, not another URL for you to misinterpret... Finally got the new contract offer today. Surprisingly it offered the same salary point as current rather than one down. Don't know if this is because someone didn't transfer the grade correctly from the job specification, or due to some rule that if you extend someone's contract you can't reduce their salary. (I'd half anticipated it because of the second pissibolity, but naturally didn't voice my speculations.) When I mentioned it to The Professor he admitted that he hadn't noticed that particular point when scanning the offer last week. I signed. So y'all have got me to kick around again for at least another two years. -- Ivan Reid, School of Engineering & Design, _____________ CMS Collaboration, Brunel University. So you are still in with a chance of a mention in the footnotes for the Nobel Prize? Or destroying the universe.
Congrats. Now get over to the Graun and post a decent question about the LHC to that Brian Cox fella: http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2011/mar/24/brian-cox-wonders-universe
Yup, 1/3000th or so of the Nobel Prize. The glory, not the money... -- Ivan Reid, School of Engineering & Design, _____________ CMS Collaboration, Brunel University. Ah, that Cox guy, so over-rated[1]. Someone said to me a while ago, "You know, I saw Brian Cox in the CERN cafeteria at lunch yesterday. I nearly didn't recognise him because he wasn't surrounded by film crew!" So, he has as many critics in the physics field as he does in the TV audience (reviewers, anyway). Quell surprise! The Guardian g2 interview suggests he's getting a bit of a bum rap. I've not worked with, nor even met, the guy so I really shouldn't offer an opinion. [1] By the media. My former boss is now head of the Physics Dept. at Personbosomer (last I looked), but some media puffery would have Brian as leading their quest for Higgs, etc. My impression is that Brian's pretty much on permanent leave of absence at the moment. -- Ivan Reid, School of Engineering & Design, _____________ CMS Collaboration, Brunel University. Is that because he's not a very good physicist, or because he's tarting himself around the media? I quite like his shows, but then I'm easily pleased.
I haven't met him either, but I will offer an opinion. I neither know nor care how good he is at physics. The important thing for his target audience is that he's excellent at making what can be very tedious stuff appear interesting & exciting. Love him or hate him, lots of people who wouldn't stick with Horizon for more than 5 seconds are learning stuff, & that has to be a good thing, even if some of that stuff is disputed.
Mostly the latter, I think. It's probably spelt J E A L O U S Y. -- Ivan Reid, School of Engineering & Design, _____________ CMS Collaboration, Brunel University. That is wrong. They should be dead grateful to him for what he has done. He admits himself the was inspired by popular science programmes on the telebox when they was watched in black and white in both visible and X-ray frequencies. By his efforts he might bring a few more bright unlikelies into the business and as Ivan will tell you the business is short of natural talents that will work for peanuts. As to his talents as a fizzie cist I could not comment but as long as he and all the rest of them keep insisting the universe is 14.7 billions years old I shall think little of them.
