    were brought up on aussie soaps.

    I do it when speaking spanish if I'm asking a question, as that's the
    only way to ask a question that might otherwise sound like a statement.

    ie; "you're at home?" ´cause there is no "are you?" construct.

    I'm sure it is. Damned annoying though, since it washes away any trace of
