I'm sort of considering slipping an old Daihatsu turbodiesel triple into the
    frame...

Ta, but I'm interested in the diesel route for reasons of weirdness and tank
range, rather than simply getting it operational. I reckon a diesel RT
    could do Calais-Frankfurt non-stop.

Ya wee beauty! Somebody else has seen the light!
'Bout 15 years ago I thought about that particular combination, but it
was anothet 'tuit project. No particular reason that I could see why it
wouldn't work, just a bit of custom flywheeling / engine plate and in it
fits. The engine characterists are similar to the original lump, so the
    'box should be ok.

The turbo 1000 pushes out around 90bhp, iirc.

The only drawback I can see is that I may need to make serious changes to
the gearing - the RT's set to do 15mph/1000rpm (approx) in top. If the
diesel will only rev to 3000 (say), then it's not going to be very fast.

Better find some performance graphs for the diesel...

  10. modern car diesels typically rev to about 4500-5000. Still only gets you to
about 70 top speed, though, so yes, you'd need something done with the
    gearing.

One day I may get around to making the 2-litre Rover motorcycle. I've a
2000 TC rover engine sitting in the shed, 's been there about 15 years,
since the car rusted away around it.

    Amendment - 70bhp, as I now recall.
Aye, that was going to be a bit of a suckitandsee type of thing. I was
thinking the top revs of the little Daihatsu lump wouldn't be too far
off the boxer twin, but if necessary there would be a couple of
    solutions...

    a) Cheapest. A wire spoked rear wheel could be fitted and different
(larger) diameter rim used. Clearance difficulties might present
themselves, but that's what angle grinders are for.

    b) More pricey but possibly the most convenient. Search the Beemer
archives for a suitable final drive box from some other model.

    c) More pricey but incovenient. Graft a Guzzi, Suzuki, Yam, whatever
shaft / swingarm and bevel box on.

    d) Most expensive. Get some nice engineering shop to knock up a custom
set of front or rear bevel gears.

Whatever - I was convinced it was a do-able project and I'm still
interested in it. I'm glad to see I wasn't wrong all those years ago.
