Well, in that case: no, I certainly don't remember them.

Can you two Methuselahs actually remember them being used?

I can, sonny, in Warden's in Newtownards, back in the last century.

  4. Yes. I remember my Mum taking me to see one when I were a nipper. God
    knows where it was, though.

This would have been, er, um, early 1960s, I suppose.

I wonder if a spiral escalator is possible? I wonder if it would be useful?
The fastest escalator I ever used was in Moscow I suspect 50% to 100% faster
than the LTR jobs and some of them are amazingly long. And very dimly lit.

I'm sure they had one in C K Tang[1] in Singapore City when I was a
    child.

[1] Huge department store with a pagoda like frontage iirc.

Of course they are - Mitsubishi make 'em.

One was tried in Holloway Road tube station in 1906, but didn't work very
well. See at the bottom of this page:

That would have been in the dark days of Communism?

You, platypus, TOG... blimey... shouldn't you all have "nearly as old as
    Auvache" numbers or something?

  12. Christ, that might even be it. We stopped at Singapore on the way back
from Vietnam, and went to Tang's where I blew all my money on a
sooper-dooper Corgi toy (Priestman Cub Shovel sort of mini-JCB thing,
    IIRC).

    That would have been 1964.

  16. Yep - those were the days - and it wasn't even darsy. It was a bit
worrying at the time as I didn't even use my real name in those days,
and there wasn't a www for him to find me on the web.

I still believe he was a member of a gang that don't like the English
    much.
I think the correct reply is #two lovely black eyes#.
