Human beings are social animals. Communication is how we maintain
    those social relationships.

  3. LOL! - what a wonderful answer. Mind your head doesn't get wedged in
    the door frame.

  4. and people call me patronising at times.

Yes I do know that - note the word constantly. People maintained
effective social relationships long before there were PCs, Faxes, Mobile
    phones, text messages etc.

I suspect most mobile calls and texts are pointless - "hello I've just
got on the bus, I'll be home in 20 minutes". FFS - what has that got to
do with anything *unless* the person has been delayed for 6 hours and is
just on the home stretch and it's the first chance they've had to tell
    someone where they are?

Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Paul Corfield
    You'd be surprised.

"I couldn't get a signal, I've been stuck on the Central Line for the
    last six hours."

  6. whatever mr smuggikins.
We'll just have to disagree on this. I hear the drivel people talk about
    - believe me there is no need for most of it. People are just obsessed
with their mobile telephones, clutching them tightly like little
survival packs - help, help no phone I cannot function.
Well if they ever start using those words they'll need to install vomit
    bins on buses.

  7. well given the complete collapse of tube services this morning from
North East London [1] I would not necessarily disagree with your
    comment.

I am convinced someone at Metronet BCV has a plan to permanently shut
the Victoria Line - they keep running mini trials of their masterplan at
    my end of the line.

[1] No Central Line for about 6 hours and no Victoria for about 3.

Heh, I like the "he", given traditionally it's much harder to get a
bloke do more than utter 3 sentences on the phone.
Aww. If I make a call like that it means "so get the dinner on and
have a cup of tea ready".

30 minutes late into Paddington due to 'unexpected engineering works' and a
    'defective train'.

Follwed by another 40 minutes wasted trying to board a central line train.

Still, I got a bit of exercise.

Do you know the sort of people who would send you such messages?

The problem with only carrying a cell 'phone when YOU want to use it is
that it's extremely unlikely that it'll be on when somebody tries to call
you with something a bit more important. I'm not talking life-or-death,
just simple, social stuff. Like somebody's in the area unexpectedly and
wants to meet for lunch. Or letting you know that there's some event on
    tonight.

If your 'phone is never on, people will get to know it and not bother
    calling you.

what time was this at? I had to use the tube yesterday[1] and had no
    problems with the central line.

[1] training course at Bank; no parking spaces.

probably. I can't remember where we went when I was last at porl's,
but it involved a taxi, so probably wasn't actually in Twickenham.
