Do you know the make and model of the motherboard in my PC? I need to re flash the BIOS.
Too late. I've already fucked it up badly which is why I need to do this. If only you'd said that earlier.

Good question. Well it's two fold really. The original problem was that when I booted up the PC would often get as far as "windows is loading" with the blue XP Pro screen and hang at that point. Not everytime but maybe half of the time. It got more regular until it happened every time and I couldn't get into Windows. In my frustration I decided to look at the options by pressing 'del' at the start as this was the only thing I could get into. I somehow bolloxed it completely and ended up setting the BIOS to default in desperation. When I boot up now a message comes up about searching for IDE drives and not finding any. I press escape and it boots to Win XP. It still hangs at the 2windows is loading" stage unless I hammer the enter key just prior to that screen appearing. Once I'm in it seems okay. The only other problem is that in the device manager it says that my SCSI RAID controller has no driver. I can't seem to find one :-( I should've posted this ages ago.
Normally, when you're in the BIOS, it says the BIOS version on the first page. Bung that into Google, and you should get somewhere. Alternatively: pay my petrol and beers and I'll come over and **** it up for you.....
I did! When you were flapping about it last time and you said if someone could fix it they could **** Heather.
From what you've described It's not the BIOS that's at fault, it's the install of Windows, possibly caused by corruption on the hard disk. If the bios is set to defaults then you should be working with an extrememly stable base set up, so leave that side of things alone. Find your Windows install CD, boot off it, and chose to "Upgrade" the existing installation, that'll re-install all the drivers and should sort things out.. I've no idea why hammering the enter key should have any effect, what may be better is pressing F8 when it's booting up, and selecting simple mode to see if things start up properly or with any errors. Also if you click on the Start button, Choose "Run" and then type "Eventvwr" in the box that appears and press enter, you'll be able to see the system error log which may shed some light on what's fucking up.. Look for the warning messages with red icons by them. HTH.
No idea, what have you done to it you silly sod? Its an Abit board, the model number will be printed in bold between 2 of the white PCI slots... most likely. I *think* it was this one: http://www.abit.com.tw/page/uk/motherboard/motherboard_detail.php?pMODEL_NAME=NF7-S&fMTYPE=Socket+A Flashing the bios prolly isn't the answer though. I've detroyed many a computer, but not even I would flash the bios just like that. Keep pressing F8 while the computer boots, this will give you the windows boot menu. Pick "Safe mode without networking" and see if that works. In this situation I would slap the winXP CD in and choose reinstall, this will reinstall everything, but it won't destroy any of the files, documents etc. I've got a tape backup drive with 4x20gig tapes you can have for a few notes ;-)
Its an HP XXGBi (Colorado?) which uses 10gb (20gb compressed) Travan tapes. It looks a bit like this: http://www.hpstore.hp.co.uk/item?SID=8e106f1299e6c23297acc56f3d0f98c20ae:1222&sku=C1555D You can use it in 2x3.5 bays or 1x5.25 bay, IDE Ummm, no idea what its worth, name your price basically.
Mash was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever: Hmm. Does it work, can you still get tapes for it and whereabouts in the multiverse are you? Oh, and is it IDE or SCSI?
