Do you recall being inexplicably fond of the Norton Commando HiRider? It's
    a factory custom. Avoid.

I had a vague notion that one way to tell an RD250 from a 400 was that
the 400 had twin front disks. I'm wrong, aren't I?

True on 250/350LCs, but I dunno about aircooled ones.

Ah, that's probably where I got it from. The Elsies were released at
around the time I got to where I started taking a real interest in "big"
    bikes.

It's a US-market cruiser. The yanks prefer feeble front brakes, for fear of
    being pitched over the apehangers.

Yup, you are. They were both single disc front.

I could do a Lozzo here and say that the 350LC also had an engine
stabilizer bar fitted as another giveaway. 250s that had been raced
often had a second disc/caliper fitted, because it was permitted in
the rules by some clubs, and the caliper lugs & disc mounting holes
were also present on the 250.

Loz will now come along and tell us that the 350 engine stabilizer
wasn't fitted until frame number xxxxxxxx.

Nope, the aircooled 2-stroke twins from 1972 on all came with single
discs. 350LCs had twin discs where the 250LC only had one.

The stabiliser bars were fitted to both 250 and 350 models from early
1981. The very early 250 and 350 models from 1980 cracked the exhaust
downpipes with great regularity and Yamaha supplied modified exhausts
under warranty for the first models and then modified the crankcases
and frame to take the stabiliser bars later that year. The third batch
of LCs to be imported to the country had the stabiliser bars - the
first batch were all 250s, the second batch were mixed 250 and 350.

    I *knew* it!

ISTR that one of the mods (not sure if it was an aftermarket or
production fix) was to machine something like 1.2mm off the rear
exhaust hanger bushes - it helped reduce the wobble of the entire
exhaust that caused the cracking. I figured that one out for myself,
then heard that it was a factory mod. I was rather chuffed at the
    time.

You're trying to wipe the human race out, yes?

Shame the whole final generation will die as virgins.
