I have seen a 98 R1 in blue which has a genuine 6k miles only, totally
standard except for the double bubble but with the standard screen as
    well.
There is some stone chip damage to the front mudguard, but very slight.
I am impressed that it is a very early one, really well looked after and
    a known history.
The dealer wants 3.7k. My question is do I swap my Ace for a bike I have
coveted for many a year, when the Ace is so good at the long distance
    stuff.

    Why not have both?

    Foto man says...
If you want to do long distance stuff then keep the Ace. R1s are
uncomfortable for me, I don't like them at all. I don't regret selling
my Ace, but I wish I could have kept it as well as my 9R and then this
bike. It all depends on how comitted your riding is as to whether
you'll ever feel like you're getting the best out of an R1. The Ace is
a top bike, which is why Colin bought another one when he sold me mine.
Anyway, I'm hoping you scratch the Ace's front mudguard cos I have a
mint one here in the same colour as yours :)

3.7K sounds pricey for a 98 R1, no matter how clean it is. You can get
2000/2001 models for that much or less.

Thanks Loz - truth be told I couldn't get the best out any sports bike -
but that doesn't stop me enjoying the experience of owning and riding
them. Perhaps if I do the run to Mugello again I would no doubt prefer
the Ace, but this R1 is so tempting.

I'll take it out for a spin tomorrow I think and see what the initial
    impressions are.

Well that would be a factor. The thinking at the time would be to keep
both then sell the one you didn't "like" any more but fairy nuff :)

    I also found it uncomfortable.

Aye, a lot of dosh for a 7 year old bike. Hell 7 years, where did they go.
IMO? the pre-2000 was a better bike.

Our local (in France) Yamaha dealer has got one brand new 2004 model
left and is askiing, IIRC, 8500. Euros, that is. So just over five
grand sterling. If anyone wants it I'll gladly pick it up for you...

Are they still strangled by French legislation or are they full power
    these days?

Strictly speaking they are still limited to ~105 horse, IIRC, but it
seams that in practice most dealers are happy to remove the
restrictions. It is a French law, after all.
