    Help.

The NSR is seriously in need of a hugger as the boy insists on riding it in
all sorts of weather, and the rear shock is getting seriously coated in salt
    and other nasties.

Nobody seems to make a hugger specifically for the wee beastie, any idea of
any specialist plastics (road / race) who might be able to oblige?

Heh, after the last Pixiefest I suggested applying a little of your
"styling" cues to his (then) new bike.

He told be to **** off, I can't understand why.

I really haven't got a clue. If you had to have one specially made it
wouldn't be cheap. I'd be inclined to go searching bike breakers for
something that is close and can be cut down to suit.

The general consensus is to go for an early CBR600 one, and cut and shut it,
but my skills with fibreglass and / or epoxy [1] are not so hot.

[1] I did however make a rather neat job of JB Weld - ing the rear panel on
the NSR after my lad stopped, and his RS125 riding mate did not.

Yep - job's a good un. In 1983 my mate Geoff explained to me (during several
phone calls) how to convert a KE175 into an enduro bike. It involved cutting
up a plastic bucket to fit as - what you now call a hugger. Mind you I'm the
same bloke who used cut up washing up bottles to protect the rear suspension
units of my MZs - so don't think the bucket will look very pretty.

So what? Bikes have exposed shock absorbers since, well, forever, and
huggers only appeared about 5 or 10 years ago. If he's going to ride
the bike on salted roads (which he should too, at his age), get him
into the habit of rinsing it off with a bucket or two of cold water
before he puts it away. While a hugger might keep a bit of the crap
off the shock, it won't protect the brake calipers, chain, exhaust,
    wheel bearings etc etc.
Huggers are just for looks, imo, and not much more.

    Good point and well made.

Unfortunately he is 17 (need I say more)

Also, the nearest outside tap is nowhere near the bike entrance to the shed.

Whilst he does seem to clean the bike every few weeks, and use *my* chain
lube etc, one good week's worth of commuting to college up and down the A34
deposits quite an alarming amount of crap all over the rear shock.

Yes. I used to rinse the bike off, and I still do.
He's got a motorbike - I'm sure he can get to it.

He should get into the habit of at least rinsing a dirty bike. It's
something I've always done. It is more than worth a couple of minutes
to find you can sell your bike for a fair bob later on.

You want a fork gaiter offf a motocrosser cut down and slid over the end of
the shock and cable tied in place. I've used this on many monoshock bikes
both on and off-road with good results: ie: no nasties on the shock.

It was specifically the crap encrusted rear shock which caught my eye, I
didn't really look at the rest of it.
