Now, I'm no expert, but even I can see wrong brake caliper, wrong
colour, wrong f/guard, missing side panel and a general air of
    horribleness....

It's a total snotter and the seller says this:

"YAMAHA RD 250 THIS IS A WELL CARED FOR MOTORCYCLE IN VERY GOOD
ORIGINAL CONDITION WHICH HAS BEEN DRY STORED SINCE JANUARY 2000. THESE
EARLY DREAM MACHINES ARE HARD TO FIND IN LOVELY CONDITION LIKE THIS. "

    Arrrgh.

I don't know where to start, but I will add wrong seat unit to the list.
    1976 would make it a C model, which didn't have a tailpiece. You're
right about the caliper, but it is the correct type for a D model, same
caliper without the Yamaha badge that was fitted to the C.

That's a fucking nasty POS, I wouldn't be surprised if it howled on
    moonlit nights.

Do they come with gaffa tape on the seat as standard?

    Not always :)

They do have a little flap type compartment[1] under the seat in which
was a little polythene ziplock bag[2] as standard. These got lost,
usually within the first few weeks, but somehow over the years I amassed
a collection if 15 of the little buggers. I sold them individually at an
RD rally for a tenner each.

When someone says to me that their bike is absolutely original and
standard that's the first thing I go looking for. It's quite an ego-
deflater when I point out they don't have the little bag. It's almost
like saying "Your bikes really shit, mate", but that's not the
    intention.

[1] Why it was there no-one ever knows, because the owner's handbook
didn't fit in there, nor did the service book.
[2] Easily identified as RD ones by the size and little red stripe on
    them.
