Get your arse out to Fuerteventura and give Backtrax a bell.

I assure you, you'll fucking love it.

Shame the American Star's pretty much completely gone now, I'd have
liked to have seen it intact...

Thanks Monkey for the recommendation - the new owners Nige and Mandie
are sterling fellows (if a bit northern) and barely batted an eyelid
when I inadvertently threw myself and one of their bikes down a rather
steep hillside covered in big pointy rocks.

I've considered it a few times when I've been out there, but the lure
of the windsurfing always wins out.

The one across the island to the beach. Or, rather, a cliff-top
overlooking the beach and the wreck. Nige seems to like his hilltop
views and it was just him and me out for a ride so rather than take the
flat trails he took a more direct route over the hills. Until I lobbed
it, anyway, then things got a little less adventurous.

Good bikes, those DRZs. Don't think I'll bother looking at one with road
wheels as a cross-town commuter - absolutely awful to ride on tarmac and
hardly the fruitiest engine - but off-road they have plenty of low-down
grunt and standing up with plenty of weight over the front they work OK.
There were a bunch of germans out on WR250s and their guide was
grumbling about how he was having to work the gears that much more than
    the 400s we were on.

Interesting first few minutes of riding on the loose stuff though,
having never done it before. My first thought was "if I got this kind of
feedback from the tyres on a road bike I'd think I was about to die". By
the end of the day I was gassing it along boulder-strewn riverbeds,
having to ease off a bit to avoid rear-ending my guide.

Slithering a quad through the dunes was a walk in the park in
    comparison.

That means you'd have no problems at all on snow and ice.

You've just run out of excuses.

I may have no more excuses, but I can always fall back on the same
justification: I'm not stupid enough to go. Not quite, anyway.

140 euros for a 6 hour tour, including a sarnie for lunch. And they came
to pick me up / drop me off at my apartment about 50km from their place,
    which was nice.

On a similar note, a couple of days later I was riding a quad through El
Cotillo and some loon came howling through town with the front wheel
three feet in the air, fishtailed past and went flying off up the beach
with a fucking great roostertail of sand behind him. After my weak
attempts at off-road riding I had the greatest respect!
Yeah, there are thumbnails one directory up but hell, it's 2009, three
megs a pop isn't exactly outrageous. Doesn't your web browser auto-
    resize?

I throttle the pron uploads to a mere 50KB/s. The rest is there for the
    taking.
