Let me know how you get on... some kind of warm pug-e-ot is an option on
my list when I opt out of the company car thing next yr.

I like Astons, but what I'd really like to be able to do is afford to
throw enough money at Jaguar Special Projects Division to take a regular
looking black S-Type (with the black grille) then throw whatever they
can inside to make it handle, go quickly and stop. I'd be willing to
forgo some of the comfort if the leather is sumptuous (and black with
gunmetal piping) and the supercharger(s) on the V8 are audible.

Now, who's going to sponsor this folly?

So, what do you aspire to?

Well, I'm optimistic but expecting something to go horrible wrong.
97/P, 73k miles, all mod cons, cost me a touch under 2k. Looks fine,
and the test drive turned up not a single flaw - it goes like stink
(for a small car), handles perfectly and if I'm lucky it'll turn out
to be a bit of a bargain. Or cost me a small fortune to repair. Either
way, it should at least get me through winter!

I went to look at an S16 yesterday which was up for 1850. 120k miles,
blacked out windows, lowered suspension, K&Ns, etc. Obv. I didn't
know about any of that when I arranged to see it. Engine was OK, but
the steering was like lead, the brakes were wooden, 5th gear was shot
and the clutch was about to burst into flames. And it didn't really
seem any faster than the XSi.

I might have just binned the video. Or I might have it sitting in
my charity shop box (to be replaced by a dvd at some point.)

If the latter, I'll bring it to EOSM with my DVD of Psychomania.
We are having a raffle, right?

The last time I drove a peugeot I put it into a ditch, sideways, at
    about 35 MPH.

Then I got it pulled out by a passing truck.

Then I drove home, it wasn't dented because the ditch was full of mud.

    Yeah, sounds ideal.

I'd be prepared to stretch to a lower mileage one, just want to know
what isn't good really, if anything..
I'd actually go in the other direction, I really enjoyed the 106 Ralleye
I played in several years ago.. basic car with all the heavy stuff taken
out, steel wheels with wide tyres (in a rally ready spec) and somewhat
    perky engine, for a 1.3.

I'd only need to install a passable cd player.

Is that the one with the gear stick that pokes out of the dash?

Yeah, the one in yellow's gagging for it.

They're pretty excellent fun cars - you can get loads in them.

If you're talking about a car that can rival, say, my b12 for
performance and traffic-cutting ability, then obv. you're talking
about a lot of money in the first instance, and a complete disregard
for the laws of physics in the second.

But that'd be looking at it from entirely the wrong angle. I've just
bought a cheap winter runabout that'll keep me warm, dry and allow me
to go places with the mrs without first having to cajole her into
getting on the back of the bike, and it has a motor that (if not liable
to break the sound barrier) more than copes with what'll be asked of
    it.

2 litre Pug 306 with all mod cons (might even have air conditioning,
must confess I didn't check) that'll nudge towards double the national
speed limit, costs less to insure full comp than the 7R I'm thinking of
buying does TPFT, and will happily take a couple of pushbikes in the
    back. All for two large.

But the key point is that I've realised that rather than riding all
year round, persuading myself that I can't afford a half-reasonable
motor, I can just spend a few quid and solve half my problems. La
pretence est mort, vive l'overdraft! ;)

An Audi 100 estate is another car you can get a lot into.

There used to be a quatro one liveing near my house once. It was huge
    for a cage.

Interestingly I've found that running both the GSXR and the Civic this
year has cost me less than running just the GSXR50 in previous years.
Mainly because I'm not buying new tyres and services every other
    month.

Given the absolutely disgusting fuel efficiency of the bandit, I
reckon bike vs car (even for a warm hatch) is going to be pretty
    much pound for pound.
I'll almost certainly rack up a shedload more mileage in the car
than on the bike though, to go to all the places the mrs has
refused to go pillion over the last two years.

So if anyone's a Duxford expert, or fancies a lift to monkey world,
    let me know.

That was what shocked me. I've done the "doing extra stuff" thing and
    it's still cheaper.

Well let's face it, bikes are a bit like heroin. Fucking expensive,
ruin your appreciation of everything else in the long run, but from
time to time you gotta get a hit.
