paging Kawasaki types

    This positive neutral thing, is there a knack to it? I seem to be going from
    first to neutral a lot when setting off.

    Change the angle of your gear shift lever and this should help, also
    check the tension on your clutch cable against the spec.

    Hmm. Never had that. I'm trying to remember the mechanism in my
    head, and frankly failing, but ISTR that is works with a spring and
    ball bearing, that, once the output shaft is spinning, the
    centrifugal[1] force ensures it doesn't engage. So, it could be that
    the ball bearing / spring is gunged up and not moving properly. But
    this is something of a guess.

    It's not too bad to get to, as it's outside the crankcases, behind the
    so-called "transmission cover", on the gearchange side of the engine.
    Less than an hours work to get to it - remove LH fairing, clutch m/c,
    sprocket cover, front sprocket, rear wheel (to be able twist chain out
    the way and remove front sprocket) and then transmission cover.
    <thinks> And you need to drain the oil to. And the trans cover has
    its own gasket, which will need to be replaced.

    Its under warrenty so I'll be taking it back to the shop but I just want to
    make sure its a real problem first. It has some rearsets[1] fitted so it may
    be, as suggested above, that the gear lever position needs fettling a bit.


    [1] Bare shiny alloy, which has now been introduced to wet salty roads for
    the 1st time. I can *hear* them dissolving in the car park.

    Just been looking in the Haynes book for my ZX9, the neutral switch is
    as Champ says but the actual mechanism consists of two steel balls
    located in two small holes on fifth gear. The manual warns against using
    grease to hold these in place during reassembly as they need to move
    freely for the mechanism to work. I don't see how they can be got at
    without stripping the gearbox. I've had four Kawasaki's with this system
    and never had any problems with any of them.

    Ok, have tightened up the gear lever and positioned it in a better spot for
    the dainty flash foot.

    Much stopping and starting has revealed that the PNT makes a click when it
    disengages and taking that as a cue to change top second seems to have
    solved the problem. Still think its a bit pointless though (imo).

    Speaking as a part-time user of a none-down/five-up arrangement - I'd
    love a PNF on the KH500.

    The bad news is: the KH500 had one - but I've got a H1E motor in the
    bloody thing.
