I had a small problem with my electric screen going 'click'. On
inspection the cables had come close to siezing and the motor that
drives them had jumped a tooth or so.

To pre-empt this I'd suggest you take the electric screen assembly off
(remove inner fairing, remove screen unit) and then take the motor/drive
gear off (three torx fastners). You can then get at the cables and
lubricate with whatever. Don't move the screen without having marked
where it was in the first place since then everything will be out of
kilter and heavens knows how to reset it.

My cables had dried out and become stiff, an hour or so cocking about
with it, cleaning and regreasing and they're (seemingly) fine again.
Time well spent when a replacement second hand screen unit runs to 100
    quid...

    New parts are *shudder*

Yep, that seems to be standard procedure on his 'big service' schedule.
    Did that on mine, too.
Kind of AOL - I tend to adjust the screeen pretty much every time as
    well.

  3. Interestingly, Brian Giles, the Tonbridge-based independent, cleaned and
lubed the cables on mine as part of the massive overhaul he did when I
    bought it.

His take is that the cables tend to seize only if you don't actually
*use* the leccy screen, which makes sense, I suppose. So I pop it up
every time I ride, and every time I park, pop it down again.

Well, I use it on a regular basis but I don't think that the use stops
    the grease drying out.

Anyway, sounds like the chap you've used for servicing is a little
    obsessive; which is good.

    A little?

    Sir is fucking joking.

But yes, he is very good at the BMW repair lark.

  6. He has a sort of BMW-induced OCD.
Oh, yes, indeed. You should have seen his face when, once (and once
only), I mentioned the possibility of using pattern parts.....

Well we all know now that Slic50 is snakeoil but they do a tube of teflon
enhanced grease which appears not to dry out and I used it on stuff like
    this.

  9. He's brilliant. But if you ask him to fettle anything other than a BMW,
I think he'd have a mental breakdown and start throwing spanners at you.
