That's very true. I don't know a lot about art, but two family
members and two friends are very keen, so they tend to enthuse me when
    we speak about it.

I've also got a friend who's a highly regarded landscape artist. But,
curiously, he's a bit of a fucking philistine.
The Botanical Gardens in Cambridge do the same for me.

  2. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Paul Corfield
The Kew Steam Museum is where it's at, buddy.

snip - coming to thread late - art is subjective, some knowledge of
symbolism helps an individual get more out of 'modern' art IMO.
    YMshouldV. That's the whole point.
These I like, they remind me of Jack Vettriano

    http://www.vettriano-art.com/

I have a small print of Billy Boys in my hall.

Veering slightly - I have never found a piece of art that has inspired
me as much as nature. I was at my favourite piece of coast line
earlier today and this for me surpasses any human creation.

I was dissapointed the return balloon flight never happened :(

Anyone doing the July 4th thing this year?
And say goodbye to any free time. I've unsubscribed again, there just
aren't enough hours in the day.

Or that big red silk trumpet-shaped thing that was in the main hall at
    Tate Modern...

Talking of which, who fancies a UKRM visit to Tate Modern sometime?

  8. No. It might sound fine as a philosophical concept but
it sucks bigtime when you try to map it on to reality..
So what has a biblical parable got to do with it?

I felt that myself so I actually grabbed some of my girlfriend's art
materials and had a go. What I produced was just blocks of
complementary colours on a canvas. Rothko's have another quality
about them that I just couldn't get. That's the genius of the artist,
rather than someone splodging paint on a canvas.

I think you need to see them full size and hung on a wall. They're
very powerful when displayed properly. Those tiny images really don't
    do them justice.

If you've got an Athena or John Lewis or Ikea near you, they'll have
full size prints of Rothko's. Worth having a look.

They do that, and that's the kind of art I like. I, personally, don't
like "pictures" because if somethings going to be realistic I prefer a
photographic. I like my art to be slightly abstract. But that's just
    me.
Spot on there. My Mum did a fine art degree and was a jeweller so
I've grown up around fine art. And my Dad is a civil engineer so I
learnt the beauty in large scale engineering as well. It formed a
nice contrast and gave me very broad horizons with regard to art.
I dunno. Where you are you have some of the finest galleries around.
Just go for a wander. Don't worry about what other people say is
good, just look for stuff that you like to look at. Then do a bit of
    research into the artists.

I found Rothko by flicking through posters in Ikea! The other two I
posted links to I found in a small gallery in Solihull on Monday while
I was wandering around looking at engagement rings. They just jumped
out at me from the wall, and that says to me that I like them, so I
had a chat with the gallery owner about them and the artists.

As a result of that I discovered that Beatties department store have a
small gallery and they'll actually let you borrow stuff to see if you
like it in your home. I think I'll be borrowing some to try out.
They will also take stuff back after 6 months or a year and give you
full value for it against something else if you decide you don't like
    it.

Not my sort of thing. I'm not too keen of paintings of "pictures"
IYSWIM. Although that one does remind me of living up north and of
    Lowry's work.
    Google is your friend dude:

Yes, they are in a similar vein, although Vettriano seems more
realistic. I do like Billy Boys and Birth Of A Dream, might have to
    get some prints.
Agree with you there, but oddly I don't like landscape painting or
pictures. You never seem to be able to capture the scale and size of
    nature.

    AOL.

I like Stanley Spencer. It's heavily infused with religious imagery,
so it helps to know something of the stories behind the paintings.

Well, not yet. The ring won't arrive for a while yet, at the latest
it'll be the end of August, but yeah I'll be doing the dastardly deed
and she's already said yes so that makes it easier. Just need to do a
