Do we have anybody in Glasgow who would be able and willing to check out
a bike for me? Preferably someone who knows a little about
    ShiteOldBritBikes[1].

[1] No. It's worse than you think.

I can get you a good deal on a Jeep up there.

Might need a rattle can or two to sort the paint out...

    Interpol.

The three main things I'd need to know in case the seller actually gets
    back to me are:

    - Overall condition of the bike, does it look like it's only done 14k?
    - How noisy is the gearbox - does it sound like it's about to explode?
    - Does the bike idle smoothly below 1000rpm once it's hot? The lower the
idle the better. If it doesn't or it shakes, the engine's knackered.

It's cheap enough to take a punt if it's in OK condition but I don't
want to fly to Glasgow to find out it's a steaming pile o' shite.

Thirded. A nice bike _IF_ you can find a good one.
Good ones are like hens teeth.
    Lots of unobtainium is involved.

Yep, it is. Any idle speed below 1000 rpm is considered good, it can go
    down to about 600...
I think you may have trouble doing that, actually. I got a response from
the seller that would indicate I'm extraordinarily lucky - not only is
the bike cheap for what it is, runs fine and has a fresh MOT, the price
also includes free delivery anywhere in the UK!

It'll be interesting to see what his response to "Great, could a mate of
mine come and inspect the bike before I agree to buy it" is...

Sorry if the alarm bells that started ringing when I read the "seller's"
    response woke up anybody.

And in other news, a bear was observed defecating in the woods.
Sure, anytime - at the moment it looks like it's parked right over
    there, next to Des's i-R1.

  10. I rode one of the very first ones, in military spec, in 1984. Fairing
like a BMW RT, lovely engine, good handling decent brakes.

I'm not sure I'd want one now, though.

    A Classic, OTOH.....

  11. He's got a plan for dropping one of his Mazda lumps into it: I just
    *know*.

Oh, and the bastard got me thinking enough to venture out to my local
Mazda dealer, looking at used RX8s yesterday....

That's what I keep hearing and that's the one, provided it exists. Which
    I currently doubt somewhat.
Hmm yes. Or a Commander actually - nicely weird.

Haven't worked out where to fit a turbo, though.

Actually I was more thinking that if the inevitable happens, I'll check
if one of the well-respected Mazda tuners is willing to port the intake
    & exhaust ports a little...
    <sotto voce>
See Igor, I told you it was working...
    </sv>

Not enough space to store a 400/4 in the boot though, I'd wager. Did you
actually take one for a test drive?

  14. No, it was pissing down. I actually went in to look at a Mazda 6 diesel,
and they had a new RX8 on the floor, and I mentioned that I could be
tempted, for the lunacy value, and the salesman's tone changed
    completely.

I got the feeling that he regarded a diesel as just, ho hum, another
boring family car, but an RX8 was a *real* Mazda, in his book.

So we went examining the used stock. A 191hp version isn't that pricey
    really.
